Devoucoux buffalo leather...the good, the bad and the ugly...advice!!

I have a 2005/2006 (can’t remember) Biarritz that is full buffalo. It is beautiful and does not have the cracked appearance. It looked like suede when I received it but I greased it and it now looks similar to calf. I do grease it several times a year, whenever it looks dry. This saddle has absolutely no wrinkles etc. The key to buffalo is NOT to oil it. Oil saturates the hide too much and creates the wrinkled appearance.[/QUOTE]

Huh. Interesting. I didn’t know that.

I was surprised to read so many negative reviews. I have a 2007 full buffalo Chiberta, its over 10 years old now and still looks great!

Hmm, I have an all buffalo CWD SE03 and I love it! It broke right in for me. I felt SO much more secure since the first ride than in the grained buffalo (only thing that is buffalo is seat and knee rolls, the rest grained calf) I rode in prior. I do not think my saddle looks cracked what so ever! I think its just as pretty, if not prettier. The only thing I’m having trouble with is getting it past the dark reddish stage but every ride it seems better and better.

My trainer still has a Buffalo Dev from about 15+ years ago? Last I saw it it was looking about like a saddle that old and used more frequently then most would look, and had some cracking around the pomel. It was not the most attractive saddle because it also stayed more light, never oiled up like calf does, and where your leg and seat hit turned really dark, like black. Riding in it, it was super grippy, I liked it for the unpredictable ones, but I also feel like honestly after not that long, the buffalo gets just as worn as the calf and doesn’t retain that new tight grip feel like you would hope.

I have a Biarritz that is at least 8 years old - calf seat, buffalo flaps. I love it - it has worn well and is most comfortable saddle ever! I clean it with glycerin and condition it about once a month with any conditioner that contains beeswax - per the instructions of the rep that sold it to me.

I bought a used Dev Biarritz not quite a year ago. It is full buffalo and about 10 years old. The leather looks great. Wears well. Is super comfortable and grippy. It is that funny light orangish color. No where near as beautiful as the really old Butet it replaced. It is a lot of saddle and really heavy. Mine has gotten the dark places under my leg, but I assumed that is because I, also, got 2 new pairs of boots about the time I got the saddle. When I clean it, black does come off those areas. I rode in a brand new Dev of my Trainer’s a few years ago and that’s when I fell in love. I can’t say I felt any difference in her brand new saddle and my 10 year old one. It felt broken in from the beginning.
