Did anyone in Canton/Alpharetta GA lose an EMU?

Got it added. Where is Spot? I’m going to have to send off a PM.

LMH - How’s the gelding situation going? Any new excitement?

I’m forwarding the Emu-Dictionary up here, so please review & see if there’s anything that I missed. I know I got a bit slack (due to schedule) at the end .

LMH:
Have you tried any relaxing remedies - I mean for your horses, not you.
They might help take the edge off a little. There’s one called “Quietex” & one called “Relax EQ” (both are made with natural herbs). Worth a shot although there was nothing on the lables about calming for emu “situations”.
If all else fails, you might want to break out the heavy artillery & give your horses a “cocktail” a time or two for your own safety. I’m not a huge proponent of this sort of thing, but you don’t want to end up in the “emu-gency” room because of a stupid bird!
Good luck & please keep the updates coming!

thanks blueboo—guess we will see what tomorrow brings.

I am not familiar with microchipping-where would it be on an EMU and how do we get the chip “read” to find the owner?

Has anyone seen the new verizon commercial?

The guy works in a zoo…

Have you fed the Lions?
Have you fed the Emus?
Did you close the gates??

Hello…I need to buy a new EMU!

Well chase until exhausted DID work with my 2 Angora goats that have to be body clipped twice a year (perhaps that should be ANOTHER thread all to itself…let’s just say I don’t recommend doing a good neighbor any favors by taking Angora goats unless you plan on keeping them tame enough to catch and shear).

Spot you are correct! I have been mulling this over all morning…especially since I was almost injured AGAIN and one horse almost went through a fence. Seriously they have got to adjust to this damn bird.

Warhorse there really isn’t anything to work out! My neighbor doesn’t own the bird and doesn’t want the bird! We can’t get RID of it! Animal Control won’t do anything.

We can’t find anyone to tranq it or catch it. The only option is to shoot it-which she won’t do and to be honest I am not sure if I could either.

So let’s pretend however that she IS keeping the bird…now I have to get through this.

The disease (Emunoia-fear of EMU) has now spread across the entire farm. All of the horses just stand posed and stare-all morning. Except my yearling-he ignores it.

They won’t move or when they do they sprint like fools.

Leading them in was an exercise in the Spanish Riding School…no matter what field I was bringing them in from. Honestly they are becoming unsafe for me to handle.

Simply moving the horses seems absurd–if I can’t use that field it is half my farm and I usually ride in it.

So now what? How do I get the horses used to this? It has been 5 days now and they are more explosive not less.

Is this the darkest hour before the dawn?

So any suggestions on how to acclimate my horses to the damn bird (as he is now fondly known) would be appreciated.

No, they kept telling us what great, tame pets they make, and how well they get along with horses! LOL

Felix

I’m begining to think that Emus have been put here by terrorists.

Oh how funny that this thread is back. I was thinking about the emu, your horses and chez round pen just a few days ago.

Hey LMH - I asked my Barn Owner about emu’s yesterday. She and her husband used to raise them for many years.

She said that any new horses would take about a week to acclimatize to them, but remember that the other 99% of the horses were already used to them and ignored them, so that helped immensely…

There is NO money in emu’s. Thats why they got out of them.
They cost them about $300.00 a year to feed and about $120.00 each to slaughter, and on each emu, you were lucky if you broke even, let alone made any money off the meat, so unless you had a secondary market for the feathers and/or oil, in a best case scenario, you would break even on each one.
What that means is that here, and probably in your area, people are letting them run loose rather than having to feed them any longer or try and find a place that will slaughter them and hope they sell all the meat and break even.
The chances of having anyone come forward to claim it are slim to none

Emu’s can jump. High. Could easily clear you or a horse if cornered and they needed to get away.
Forget about getting a bunch of people with a lunge line or something to “herd” it into a corner. If it doesnt run right THROUGH the lunge line - it will jump over it. Or you.

Forget about trying to “catch” them. At about 120 lbs at maturity, in a panicked state, with people that dont know exactly what they are doing, you will have a problem and probably get hurt with their third killer claw.
If cornered, they will usually jump up and strike FORWARD and that third claw can slice you from top to bottom.

My friends said that when they needed to “get” one, they had constructed these huge, top to bottom, plywood “shields” that they would use to corner them and drive them down a chute or the like, but they had them in small pens and not the size of paddock you are talking about. They felt it would be literally impossible to catch them in a large paddock

They also cant see in the dark very well so apparently the easiest is to sneak up on them in the dark and throw a bedspread or something over their heads and bodies

The other recommendation was to put a sedative in its feed, so it was groggy, so it could be caught but then - once you caught it, what could you DO with it?

Hope this helps - somewhat. They said too they are the biggest PITA things you can have around

Good luck!

:Spot:

OK, my brain is TOTALLY warped. I was shooting the jr hunter divisions today at Showpark, in the record breaking heat (and humidity) (yup…great for my lupus!) and I was having hallusinations (sp) of emu races in the ring. Reminded me of Victor & the ostrich races at the old Indio shows.

Well I couldn’t blame my brain. Nearly 4 hours for 36 or so rounds & 4 very short hacks. Yes, it was a hot & long morning, so I couldn’t blame my brain for coming up with some creative emusement.

I just about died laughing when I saw the picture of your horses chasing the emu, than the picture of the emu chasing a horse. That just made my day.

Maybe you all could get a local news channel to do a little clip on it? They often have that random sort of news thing at the end, and somebody watching might have a good home for it.

UMM…Looks like the fabled Bottomless Pint landed at PARTY Rose’s last night…

Another on up the road!?!?! I hope the kangaroo farm doesnt loose any of its herd!!!

Is it time for a sage cleansing?

May I suggest this technique?

Oh - YOU’RE the one with the Horse-on-a-Pedestal-picture!

I LOVED that picture! Thats one of my favorites!

From Georgia to New Hamp-ster ( )… they’re planning a coup

*and ya know, it sounds best if you say that in Mayor Adam West’s crazy voice ala Family Guy line “they’re stealing my water” “they’re planning a coooooouuuuu”

My EMU thread is back! Suddenly the world seems right again!

JMS-where is that EMU farm-I may need to take a peek at a little feather duster for old time sake.
