Did anyone see this comment?

Welp. I used to like her when she was on Pushing Daisies. Her character, Olive, was a former jockey and a couple episodes centered around that.

The nerve to use live horses on a TV show (for entertainment purposes) when they should be running freeeeeely across a rolling green pasture. :roll eyes:

Of course everyone is entited to their own opinion, but actors really need stick to what they do best. Act like someone else.

Holler at me if you must, but what is the deal with the whole carriage horse issue? I’ve seen this pop up on COTH regularly over the years, but all I can glean is that Cothers are generally pro-carriage horse and celebrities are not. Could someone bring me up to speed on what exactly is the bone of contention?

The perfect storm, basically.

2 or three major groups have zeroed in on those steadfast few:

Animal rights advocates and a real estate developer who cloaked himself with the warm fuzzies of the animal rights agenda, while all he really wants is the property those 3 stables are on - prime real estate in Manhattan.

The AR people claim abuse.
You know the drill, poor enslaved beasties, should be free to roam the endless prairies…
Some are well meaning, but pretty much all are clueless:
sweat marks in the summer are a sign of abuse, so is loose hair where the harness is, hanging heads are a sign of depression, the drivers are at fault when the horses eat, are the devil when they don’t eat…or eat what they spilled off the pavement…
The horses are overworked, pull double shifts, can’t lay down to sleep, have to work in freezing cold and blistering heat, car fumes…
Chestnuts are ‘cancer’, the list goes on.

Don’t bring facts to the table, like that in NYC the carriage industry is highly regulated, more than any other discipline in the horse world, has at least 4 official agencies looking over them, One of them being the ASPCA, newly turned AR organization with millions in the coffers, actively trying to shut them down.

the working conditions are set in stone, as to temperatures and weather or working hours, the horses are ID’d via hoof number, halter tags and what have you, inspecting agencies can do so at any given time, paper work has to be on hand on demand, mandatory vet checks, mandatory 5 week vacation on the farm…the list goes on.

In thirty years there were not even a handful of fatalities (while each year around 100 people get killed in NYC traffic…)

The kicking point is though, and this is not a secret:
The carriage horses in NYC are the canary in the coal mines. The animal rights people have stated, over and over again, that once they are done, they will move on to the next target.

Oh, I nearly forgot…the major himself has made it his priority to keep this election promise, to ban the horses. And he is a self confessing champion of the blue collar worker…

If you want to know what’s going down from the source, contact michaleenflynn AKA Eva Hughes (she’s on FB more often than COTH these days)

It would be nice if real abuse, like the TWH soring epidemic would get this much action out of people…

Kidding aside, I actually really love Kristen Chenoweth. She’s talented as hell. That being said, I’ve just lost a whollle lot of respect for her…
You said what I was thinking.

There is a schism between those of us who think it’s OK for horses to work for a living and those who think it’s cruel to expect horses to work.

There is so much genuine cruelty in the world – towards people and towards animals – that I am blown away that anyone takes the time to campaign against working animals who are in good health. I mean, there are ribby horses in plain view on my street and nobody is down here picketing the property.

And there goes my first ever tweet! I swore I’d never, ever actually USE my twitter account, but this was worth speaking up. Brainless twit.
I popped off a reply myself. The one about following the money. That be me.

Welp, it looks like my tweet has been deleted. I can’t find it anywhere. If someone else finds it, let me know, please. @wybry. It seems a lot of tweets against her are gone and the ones from animal rights believers are still there.

Quel Surprise…

Hey Crone- Allow me to introduce myself- I’m Sarah, and I’m a huge fan of your writing. I’m also a commercial carriage driver.

So just saying that, letting you know that I’m a horseperson, a COTHer, and a fan of your blog… who actually does this commercial carriage ride thing (for over 25 years)… does that help you to see this on a horse and human level aside from the divisive objectifying way that the issue is usually presented?

I don’t work in NYC, but I did work in Philly for 8 years, for one of the biggest and best companies in the USA. Finally after many years of working for other people I have my own small one horse/one carriage company based off my farm in rural Indiana. I’d be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability.
