Difference in horse practices between countries

When I was in my late teens in the late 80s, parents would drop kids off at the barn on their way to work and pick them up on the way home. Virtually no supervision at the barn - lots of forest adventures, bareback races in the back field, the occasional trip to the hospital. It wasn’t the freedom of Jill and her friends in the 1040s (?) but it was pretty unstructured.

I graduated high school in 2002. Prior to that, I was a daily barn rat. Riding the bus to the barn before I got my DL and a car. My instructor allowed us to do a fair amount of unsupervised riding. We didn’t ride off property or jump unsupervised but we would hack around the fields for hours.
