Thank you for all the information! I’m actually experimenting with pelleted corn cob bedding right now, and so far it’s working out better than the pine pellets I’ve used before- it fluffs up a lot more, and 5ish bags easily makes a 2in bed.
Caveat on the corncobs:
I tried them a long time ago (10yrs+) & while I loved them for the low-dust & pickability, Used them for probably 6mos before my 1 horse developed RAD from them. My other horse never showed any symptoms.
He developed a cough, then rales I could hear w/o a stethoscope & finally a heaveline.
At vet’s advice, I treated with Clenbuterol ($$$) for 3mos, while switching the bedding to pellets & soaking his hay.
Once the cob bedding was gone, symptoms abated & vet said on his final visit that if he hadn’t heard the lungs at first, he never would have guessed RAD now.
Google gave me the info that dairy cattle bedded on cobs can become allergic to mold that occurs in them & develop respiratory symptoms.
So far it’s been really nice and dry with no smell- I did mix in some pine pellets as well though. It is dried, pelleted, and bagged corn cob though, not loose bedding.
