Digital SLR Cameras for Horse Photos - Recommendations Please.
Personally, I stick with Nikon lenses, however, I do know many who are very pleased with the performance of both Tamron and Sigma lenses. If you are only using the lenses for action shots, the lack of VR shouldn’t be a problem, as the shutter speed which is fast enough to stop the action of the subject, should also be enough to stop the movement of the photographer. If you are doing low light/slow shutter speed, then VR is worth its weight in gold!!!

Action shots with the Tamron/Sigma vs. Nikon…the third party lenses are good, but not as good as the high end Nikon lenses for focusing speed (which is mostly determined by the lens, not the camera body), and Nikon also has an edge in sharpness as well. An excellent lens which will be a bit better than the third party, IMO ;), but not as expensive as the 70-200 VRII, is the older Nikon 80-200.
I meant to tell you think you for the information. I didn’t get back to COTH until now. So - thank you!

Inspired by this thread I made the leap for a new camera.

I was going to get the Canon Rebel XS but ended up with a Nikon D3000. I am SO very excited!

I have a several year old Sony a100 and it caused be to become picture phobic. It was complicated and I did not like the auto pictures so I was stuck.

I am already loving the Nikon. I got the kit with the zoom as well.

It looks to be very user newbie friendly.

Remember - it’s not the wand - it’s the magician!

Don’t let the camera do your thinking for you.
You’ll still have to pre-focus. As it’s been said, lock focus on the jump rail, then follow the horse to the jump.
Burst fire is great (fast continuous mode).
But I always go shutter-priority to avoid motion blur. The longer the focal length of the lens, the more prone to focus/blur problems.

And I can’t overemphasize the value of a monopod with a long lens!

Well, I have one… I’ll have to tell it it can’t do that!

Casio Exilim EX-F1

I’ll upload a series to demonstrate…

Of course it might not fit your definition of a still camera…

series of 10 at 60 fps…this series took 1/6th of a second
Oh - THANKS so much for That! I was wondering if any horsey people have picked up on this make and model.

I’ve had my eye on your camera for a while now, and a new, less expensive model has just come out the Casio EX-FH25
http://www.casio.com/products/Cameras/EXILIM_High-Speed/EX-FH25/

ONLY 40 frames per second  - and Ultra SloMo 1000fps Video Recording - but I think it’ll make a perfect addition to my Camera Toy Box ! No more missing the perfect shot.
