Of course, it also depends on the horse! I did Pony Club and setting up and getting through a gymnastic was part of my last rating qualification. I took a big chunky draft cross for the jumping section and the examiners would not believe me that he had a 9ft stride. I set up the gymnastic and they made me move it out longer because they didn’t want us to crash (I know they were planning on failing me) and I had to bang my poor horse through it twice before we shortened it back up to where I had it. Stride length and adjustability is a good thing to learn about your horse so you can keep it in mind when you’re walking courses.

Sorry to hijack, but can what about distances for a pole course? I like to practice riding lines of poles and adding or leaving out a stride but never know how to space them correctly.
