DIY chlorhexidine oral rinse

Does anyone know if you can make an chlorhexidine oral rinse yourself?

If so, do you use the 2% chlorhexidine solution and dilute it?

What is the dilution rate?

Thanks!

That’s what I’ve done, 3:1 with water so it’s a .5% dilution. It appears to taste horrible

Yes, I imagine it does

There is a product in Australia called hexarinse that is a sweet tasting chlorhexidine rinse, but it is only available there it seems.

I’ve added Listerine to the mix to improve the taste.

Brilliant!

Ive gotten the rinse from my dentist (to the tune of $50!) and it seems all they’ve done is add mint flavor. It DOES taste disgusting. I heard some people are more sensitive to the taste than others…

Your dentist is ripping you off! Ask for a scrip, get it at the pharmacy. It’s called Perioguard.

Oral chlorhexidine should be 0.12% - you don’t want it too strong or you’ll just burn the tissue. You also want to find chlorhexidine gluconate rather than chlorhexidine acetate, if you can.

Yes, I bought Perioguard from them…for $50 :open_mouth: believe me, not buying it any more. Especially considering I’m not the best about actually using it! It does taste pretty gnarly for several hours after use for me… ick
