Do Hunts re-locate foxes?

Great news!

Depending on when they were born the parents should be breaking the plate around August or September.

Red Fox territory can overlap, and it varies depending on how abundant food is. But generally its territory is several square miles. The babies will most likely travel pretty far.

If you’ve ever noticed, in the fall you may see a lot of roadkill fox. It’s not from us foxhunters chasing them - it’s the babies looking for their territory and not making it across the road.

What’s ironic is that I have been engaged in an epic battle with a pair of foxes who have decide that my chickens are their favorite food. Yup, they’re feeding babies. I’ve seen them.

I have turned into Carl Spackler from Caddyshack. I’ve tried everything to thwart the little buggers and finally decided to shoot the damn things.

Well, no need to tell you how that worked out.

I am outfoxed.

I’m so glad he decided to give them another chance - I’m sure everything will turn out fine. Just think of all the mice they’re catching!

Great post full of good information JSwan. I had not thought that the increased sightings may be a result of looking for food for the kits. I will tell the homeowner about this possibility. He is not a cruel man, just a typical suburbanite who does not really feel all that comfortable with “real” nature. He and his neighbors fear rabies and the foxes biting children and pets. The idea of babies may soften his heart and buy some time to allow them to finish raising the kits and see if they see less of them afterwards.

I should be so lucky as to have a pair of foxes denning on my farm! Instead I have a rat infestation that moved in after the ungodly amount of snow that was dumped on Southern NJ this winter. They ignore my poison and invite more friends to come and enjoy the good living. I have heard that skunks will kill rats as well, I would (almost!) welcome some skunks even at this point! That would become like the parable and I would need something to get rid of the skunks, then something to get rid of what got the skunks out and so on until I was up to the tiger being chased away by the elephant! Anyone have some efficient rat terriers that they want to bring over to my place for some hunting???

I am making calls this afternoon and contacting the game warden in that area will be my first priority.

Thanks again to Jswan and everyone else who provided suggestions![/QUOTE]

Irony rears its ugly head! I just came back from picking up one of my dogs from the groomers at PetSmart…they had to de-skunk him! Hopefully the skunk will scare away the rats?

Fox sighting

I was walking my dog last weekend around 7 am and heard some scrambling on the 6’ stockade fence across the street. I looked over expecting to see a couple of squirrels chasing each other. I saw one squirrel, but the other jumper was a fox. He just missed that squirrel going up the tree. He tried to climb the tree too. Guess he missed breakfast.

We have a lot of fox in my very suburban neighborhood and I welcome them to keep the rats, squirrels and sadly chipmunks under control.

I think this fox is one of the kits from last year since he still had some black in his fur.
