Dodge's New 6 cyl Diesel Half Ton - anyone?

The new Ford EcoBoost engines are V6 with more power than their V8s, and are gas. I’ve been very pleased towing with it, it has more than enough power.

These Ram EcoDiesels sound fabulous, too! They don’t work for my situation and my trailer though.

…OP, let us know what you decide- love all Dodge/Ram diesels, even though I’ve never owned one
haha, it will be a while before I am OFFICIALLY in the market…my 2013 was purchased brand new, so with several years left to pay on it, I have some time to decide! I was just curious as the new 6 cyl diesels are new, I wasn’t sure what kind of reviews they’d been getting. Sounds good so far. If they are still around when I decide I need a new payment, I’ll probably check them out.

The 3.0L EcoDiesel has more torque than the Hemi and is a very different animal from a V6 gas engine. It’s designed for hauling. As I mentioned before, had it been available when I was buying my vehicle, I would have bought it instead of the Hemi, especially with all the miles I put on due to business travel.
I don’t doubt you at all. I am just old and set in my ways, I guess. It just worries me that the trend is for lighter trucks and cars pulling trailers .

Oh, I do understand, but “lighter”, at least relative to weight and power, may not be the best way to describe today’s versions of these vehicles compared to a couple generations back. Todays’ “half ton” trucks are more like yesterday’s “three quarter ton” trucks in many ways. They can do a great job towing a 2h BP or even a 2h GN while also serving as an economical daily driver and/or family vehicle with the crew cab configurations.

What I’d really like to see is the north American trailer manufacturers “getting a clue” from their Euro counterparts and better address the reality of where the automotive industry is going for a variety of reasons. Slight design changes for better balance, use of lighter and stronger materials and use of inertial braking systems can make it easier and safer for many folks to haul their horse on the weekend without breaking the bank on heavier, less efficient tow vehicles…and I bet they could do it far less expensively than what it currently costs to make and import over the pond. The RAM 1500 with the EcoDiesel and the F150 with EcoBoost are examples of vehicles that are helping to “get there”, but the trailer piece also need to be examined in the long haul, as it were…

I’m getting 14 mpg right now with my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500, with my winter (studded) tires. In the summer with highway tires, I get only 17 mpg.
Is that towing mpg? I have a 2012 GMC Sierra, and get 21mpg in summer, 17 in winter. Towing my 2H DR bumper pull Hawk, I get 14-15 mpg.

Unfortunately not. That’s just commuting around.

Towing in the summer I get around 11 mpg (whether there is a horse in the trailer or not)

Towing in the winter, I’m not sure because I’ve never calculated, but if it goes down in proportion to what I get not towing, I’d guess around 8 mpg?

I’m sure my studded Cooper’s aren’t helping any, and I don’t exactly drive like I’m out on a Sunday stroll, so I’m sure I could alter my driving style to increase my values

Actually, I just noticed that I said I used highway tires in the summer, which isn’t the case. Last summer I ran General Grabber AT2’s which are a moderately aggressive all terrain tire, and was getting 17-18 mpg. I think I got 20 mpg when I had the stock highway treads on the truck

Same here. I think I just need to lay off the gas pedal
