does anyone compete on a mule?

I was privileged to attend a mule skinners rodeo out in LaGrande Oregon some years back. There were old white men riding old white mules and beating their granddaughters in the the barrel racing, and there were impeccably turned out hunter-jumper mules and there were adorable young halter mules.

My dream “horse” is a gaited mule. There are also gaited saddle donkeys, big as regular horses, somewhat more refined than Mammoth Jacks.

I have ridden a mule once, bareback. I was a kid and used to riding ponies and draft horses bareback. Got on the mule and laughed so hard I almost fell off. The feeling was completely different from being astride a horse or pony–no detectable backbone. Felt exactly like sitting on a log covered with nicely padded upholstery.

To Aspenlucas: Be braced to have trouble finding tack that fits.

Ah! Did a bit of searching for the mule John Henry. The owner’s name is Cathy Conklin and I’ve seen her post here from time to time. She and Meridith Hodges are the ladies who were instrumental in mules being permitted to show recognized. FYI, here’s her story.

Mea Culpa for this being off topic.

I’m another mule lover! Great thread!

Im in the closet about my love for mules I think they are neat and would consider breeding my tb mare to a mule however they dont seem so popular in my area… so does anyone compete on a mule?
I think they do AI, so check the website for Rock ‘N’ Easy Ranch in Southern California. They have quite an impressive Mammoth Jack named “Cowboy Picasso” that produces nice big mules out of a variety of mares, from App to Pinto to TB to QH to draft.

I dream of someday having a Hanoverian Mule (Hano mare + Jack) and taking it to Grand Prix. Just imagine those ears in Piaffe, just flop floppin away! Rocher’s ears will have nothin on my mule’s ears! And of course the best part is naming the mule. Personally, mine will be “Move ASSide Sista” or something of the sort.
Yeah, Barncat, that’s what I’m talking about. Now this is my idea of a DREAM !

Long live longears. I am a member of the American Donkey and Mule Society, and their monthly publication is called…wait for it…THE BRAYER

They have some really cool pictures that people send in.
