Where are you located? Here’s my favorite Battle Creek Hunt Club video --I am in this one too --but hard to pick out —look for the polo knee pads --old lady, black coat, bay horse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2zwGocX7f0&t=59s
You don’t look like a potato and that bridge with low sides, wow! Beautiful fixture there!
The Pony Club members all wear vest and like someone said, ideally a conservative color if they join the hunt. More & more adult members are wearing vest. The choice of air vest verses standard varies by personal choice.
…then there is the well meaning rider who chases the loose horse - all the way through and past the huntsman and hounds!! Not popular.
I am acquainted with two people who likely wouldn’t have suffered a broken neck and broken back if they’d been wearing an air vest At the very least the air vest helps prevent bruising and internal injuries in the event the horse steps on or falls on you.
But, yes. Helmets, helmets, helmets. always. IIRC, Charlotte Dujardin was walking a horse in the warm up area when she took the fall that caused brain damage and convinced her to wear a helmet from then on. I see helmetless riders in sale ads and cringe. Passed a woman riding on pavement (!) bareheaded recently. My older daughter rode a large TB in his 20’s for her first few times jumping. He tripped over his own feet coming over a X rail and she fell forward over his head. His shod hind foot clipped her helmet slightly. I have no doubt that she would’ve been gravely injured or killed if it hadn’t been for the helmet. I can’t understand why some people don’t wear them!
Beautiful! But brrrrrrrr! I hate the cold in Virginia. I could never deal with Michigan :0
Though, tomorrow’s hunt is cancelled due to the incredible rain. One of the whipper in posted a picture kayaking through her flooded pastures.
My son and his fellow Pony Clubbers went fox hunting yesterday. I was super impressed to see many of the adult members of the hunt wearing safety vests and true safety helmets. It really set a good example for the youth. Even the field master (?) had a red air vest over his red coat.
ETA, my son had a fall while galloping through mud and his vest and helmet were very helpful. He banged his head pretty hard.
GrumpyMare --I’m glad your son is ok —other than to have to remake my hunt vest to fit over my safety vest, my transition was a non-issue. I’ve seen pix of me since I started wearing it, and I don’t look beastly fat as I’d feared (Mrs. Potato Head on a Horse look). I simply look stout and that’s ok –
Yikes! Glad he’s ok. That’s always a terrifying feeling as a horsey parent.
Here is a link for a huntcoat with a zip-in air vest…Great Idea!!
