Does this sound normal for an abscess?
Yay… for future reference, do leave the bootie on for 24 hours, then change it. After dealing with chronic abscesses in my Percheron, I invested in an Equine Slipper. SOOO much easier to deal with than Gorilla Tape.

Easily washed for next time use.
I like to wrap w/ vet rap and the usual and then slip on a hoof boot – keeps the wound/site clean and keeps wrap from being damaged. works especially well when your horse has lost a shoe too :frowning:

You may want to add some antibiotic to help heal this…,

I’m going to go with my vet’s recommendation, which doesn’t include antibiotics at this point.

UPDATE: He was about 98% sound on the lunge line this morning in walk and trot (I didn’t ask him to canter). Good boy!

Yayyy! That is excellent news!

Woohoo!

Systemic AntiBiotics are of little to no value when dealing with hoof abscesses ,since, there is not enough blood flow,to,the horn to deliver it…I do,have great luck, with using DMSO and Penicillin syringed directly onto, site hole. Certain bugs respond well,to,this…constant soaking and or keeping the site wet can work against you…and do switch up the type of poultice…Sugar/Iodine or Epsom Salts n Iodine and even good old clay…
You will find even a healthy foot when left in Animal,Intx poultice will have brown gray or black goop inside when you take it off…
Another good thing to do,is scrub the foot and soak cotton in Nolvasan. Really dripping wet and pack, the sole of foot…use a diaper plastic side in and 2 plastic bags…leave on at least 24 full, hours…it is anti bacterial anti fungal anti microbial and will, seep,in and kill, the bug…a Good luck…

i’m always surprised more people don’t use poultice… i see a much healthier looking hoof after even one booting.

Why plastic side in?

Plastic side in keeps the diaper from absorbing the moisture from the poultice - want all that to stay on the foot.

So why bother with the diaper? Why not just use plastic wrap?

IME a diaper is just easier - comes up all around the foot and holds the poultice in. It provides cushioning along the way, which is a big help for some sore feet.

Update: he seems to be done draining and is getting progressively more sound. I got on him for a short walk/trot ride today and he felt pretty decent, although still had a little hitch here and there. I think we are almost there!
