In my experience, hunter jumper riders and imstructors are used to operating on the fundamental principal that anyone having a jumping lesson has the right of way and everyone else stays out of their way even if it means tucking into a corner. It can be hard to reconcile that with someone giving a dressage lesson at the same time. Particularly in a tight space. Both instructors have to be cooperative and honestly, the dressage instructor is probably going to have to stand her ground and defend her students’ rights to be moving around the ring at will; otherwise they’re going to be doing a lot of standing around. I wish more h/j instructors could teach their students to view a shared lesson ring more like a warm up arena at a show. You can’t expect to have the area clear for multiple full courses if there are other lessons going on.
