neighbor had wolf dog hybrids he breed and often let loose and they would stalk us up the side of a long hill we had to get home… was a little frustrating but a combination of a few 45 rounds in the ground between us and the dog… annnnnd straight charging them worked wonders. Also noted all of our horses are completely comfortable w/ chasing down dogs… I think its a much needed skill- not exactly sure how one would teach that cause our horses chased our dogs all over their pasture (if the dog got rolled…shame on you for not being fast enough) so maybe that was it, but it should be something they can do.
Any dogs I deal with I chase I have a small horse so I can phsyically hit a dog off his back too… very handy.
