Dog counter-surfing/inappropriate eating driving me CRAZY!

Jingles for Annie! I had a collie like this. We put kid latches on every cabinet, removed the drawer pulls from all doors, put sliding bolts on all bifold doors. Everything went in a cabinet with a kid latch. Everything.

I brought Annie home. She walked out under her own steam, came home, went to her chair (I gave her a boost) and curled up. I fed dinner and she cleaned her bowl. She has a host of meds to take, but she seems so improved it’s like a miracle. The vet was amazed. Lord love him, he told me he woke up at 3:00 am thinking about her, and how maybe she needed some Vit. B. I love my vet.

Good to hear! Hopefully more improvement will continue to follow.

Whew……Lots of jingles to speed her recovery!

What we tried, other than the mousetraps, were empty cans of soda pop. We would stack them up where our dog was likely to surf and naturally, they would come crashing down. We only needed to do this a couple of times.

The dogs we have now either don’t do this or aren’t big enough for counter surfing but we still try to be careful about where we put stuff.

Prevention is key with counter surfers - never give them the opportunity to do wrong. I have child-proof locks AND always put edibles where I have to reach up for them. It never occurs to me to leave any food out on the counters - it just becomes habit.

Thank you, everyone, for your well-wishes.

Annie continues to improve. Except for maybe being a little more fatigued than before, she’s almost back to normal. I’m so, so glad I gave her that extra day.

The meds and chocolate she got into weren’t on a counter, there were on to of a 5’ hutch. She had to climb or jump to get them. There’s nothing there now. The meds are in a drawer.

I’ll admit it - I awoke last night wondering how she was!! Love dobies.

Having had a couple of counter surfers, they are very clever and have nothing else to do all day but plan their next deed, while we have a myriad of things to get done.

My Boxer puppy is so tall now she catches me off guard - several coffee cups later when I put a mug down on a table or counter, too close to the edge.
I need training.

Ha! Case in point - my husband just got in and put his full cup of Tim Horton’s on the stair while he took off his boots. Boxer pup knocked it over and spilled it all…Hubby needs training too.
