Same for me I literally thought my dog just didn’t like toys because she never played with them even as a puppy. It turned out she had a stomach ache for 5 years of her life until we figured it out. She now plays with toys every night and instigates the younger dog all the time and will play for hours.
I would wonder about chronic pancreatitis, given those symptoms. Here’s a good article on pancreatitis, and it goes over the difference between chronic and acute pancreatitis: https://www.whole-dog-journal.com/news/Pancreatitis-Causes-and-Treatment-21579-1.html
My young, slim dog had two episodes of acute pancreatitis that required hospitalization. The Hills dry food prescribed was like hard little rocks, and didn’t work well for him. I got him back to a decent weight on the Hills canned, and boiled chicken with overboiled white rice. He was also on a prescribed pancreatic supplement for more than a year.
After trying a couple foods, I ended up going with the Avoderm baked beef food, as it was fairly low in fat and fiber and supposed to be easily digested. He’s had no further problems in the 3.5 years he’s been on it.
I’d like to know what foods other people have switched to, and found to work for their dog that had pancreatitis.
Specialist for full work up including xrays and ACTH stim test. My dog has Addisons and his early symptoms were similar. Now properly medicated and also on raw diet and he is doing great. Best Wishes
@Sswor what supplement do you feed? I am looking at digestive/GI supplements for my girl who has chronic pancreatitis. She just went on prescription food (Royal Canin GI Low Fat). So far its helping tons but its only been about a week.
@EquestrianRunner I feed Animal Essentials brand Plant Enzymes and Probiotics because it is available at my local feed store. I have been told the enzymes are really key. I’m not sold on the brand per say, just interested in the product. Similar products are available and I’m sure there’s something better out there. The big key to my dog’s gut health has been the food change, to fresh, human quality food, in my opinion, rather then a certain supplement.
@Sswor thank you! I will look into that. I didn’t even know where to start so I really appreciate that!
