Dog keeps destroying couch

This is why people crate their dogs. not only to prevent the dog from ruining their things, but to keep the dog safe from the health issues that come from eating these things. Sorry, but i would crate the dog and find a dog walker for mid day breaks.

I don’t crate either, although all of mine are crate trained. I do use baby gates to keep them out of certain rooms (the baby gates allow the cats full access and keep the dogs out).

Your dog is only 2, so an outbreak of craziness is not unexpected. Unfortunately, I find that those that chew fabric or like to unstuff things usually continue to do so or are very hard to break of it.

I would try covering the couch with a heavy throw or comforter, or as I do, a waterproof mattress pad. It might be enough to mask some of the smell and to keep the dog from chewing. The scat mats do work well - I have one that I used to use when I had a cat that was peeing on our leather couch (hence the waterproof mattress covers). Other than that, if you can block him in another area with no upholstered furniture that may help.

As for the suggestions to rehome, I think that is very extreme. I think when a dog is young like this it can be a challenge no matter what you do (depending on the dog’s temperament and energy level), bit as the dog ages IME they normally settle in to whatever the routine is.

Good luck - sounds like the dog gets a good amount of excercise…

I also have a couch eater, he is not left unsupervised. When we are not home he is crated(which really is maybe 2-3 hours at a time once or twice a day). He doesn’t gut the couch, but will quietly chew at different spots. Covering the couch only made it worse, he LOVES to grab and tear the cover to shreds. I bought a couch for $6 from the local thrift store about 3 months ago, the dog lounges all over it but has yet to taste it. Everything before that was nice furniture that I liked.

My youngest doesn’t have to be alone, she goes to the office with DH and I. Gets regular play breaks, been in dog school since little, and she’s still a handful. The same things that will make her a brilliant agility dog make her a very “busy” puppy.
