Dog respiratory illness — new, unknown, contagious

I’m going to try to restart our rally classes in January. We do keep the dogs separate and the instructors ask that you not bring a dog with even a mild case of the sniffles, but this fall I did multi-state road trips with Shaun and just didn’t feel safe bringing him (for the other dog’s sake, mostly, although he is fine). I usually bring my own crate anyway because I have one of those pop up “crates.”

It is in my area. This could be complete hearsay but a vet tech I am familiar with had said that of the animals they’ve seen where this has been suspected, the dogs with balanced nutritional intake seem to be faring better. Is it true? I don’t know. Correlation doesn’t mean causation, so it could just be a link that owners who buy better/more balanced dog food (expensive) or otherwise pay attention to canine diet may be more attentive to other sorts of issues. If I ever get clarification on that, I’ll share more.

My uncle and his wife are going out of town this weekend and rather than boarding their dog, I will be taking care of him. I will have a lot of dog for five days, but at least there is a fenced yard and my dog gets along with him. Would much rather this than have to bring a dog in right now. It’s the not knowing what it is (and how best to prevent it, or treat it) that concerns me.

I had heard about this last fall (when we were due to have daughter’s dog here for a few weeks instead of her going into kennel). Is this still circulating?

Daughter’s dog needs somewhere to be for June, and we can have her, but she’s learned how to escape the fence line which means taking her to the dogpark instead to get her yayas out. Are we still supposed to avoid other dogs?

The last I heard was that they never really identified a new virus and no one really knew if there was a new virus, or if it was regular viruses that were more severe than usual, or if it was a bacteria. I believe that some of the samples sent came back for different things. It’s very confusing.
No one can assure you anything is “safe.” Personally I take my dogs to the groomer and to dog classes.
I and most people I know avoid communal water bowls. For a while I was more stringent about nose to nose contact, but I haven’t heard of a surge in my area so right now I’m not as cautious about that.
