Dog vs. Chocolate: long term effects?

We had a generic schnauzer growing up who loved chocolate and had it fairly frequently. She never had any problems, short or long term. Except that after one party where she kept begging for M&Ms, she decided she wasn’t eating anything except candy for 2 days.

Mom’s Dalmation ate 10 pounds of Devon fudge and suffered no ill effects, save the people who wanted to kill her.

Hee hee hee! My 6 lb chihuahua found and ate an entire box of those thin mints filled with orange…I found the box shredded, and soon after, noticed her drinking an unusual amount of water. Not five minutes later she projectile vomited ten fet across the room - all orange and brown goo. After a few of these episodes, she was totally fine. She will still dig anything with chocolate residue out of any size trash can. It’s her “crack”! So we are very careful to hide anything she does not need to eat. My daughter’s Boston terrier ate an entire easter basket, candy and basket included. Vomited and then was fine.

Years ago our family Cairn Terrier ate an entire cadbury chocolate bar (with caramel) and didn’t bat an eyelash. I was bummed, that candy bar was mine.

OTOH, I met a lady in a dog obedience class who killed her previous dog by giving him a lot of m & ms every day (her admission).

Of course, after I saw the remains of the Godiva box on the floor, the least of his problems was the chocolate killing him.

the damn dog never so much as farted, either time.[/QUOTE]

Our 35# heeler/god knows what mix scarfed down an entire pound of 70% dark chocolate. I discovered the “evidence” when she was doing her business the next morning and out came the wrappers. No symptoms whatsoever.

This is the same dog that walked around with a bullet in her intestine for 3 days. A drop in her appetite and a whimper when she’d lay down were the only things that tipped us off that something was wrong. Vet was stumped, too, until he X-rayed her and saw the bullet, which he removed along with quite a bit of her gut.

So what’s a little bit of chocolate?

Many years ago my family had a chihuahua/terrier cross that was fed an entire Hershey bar every weekend when the grandparents visited. Didn’t faze her a bit and she lived to a ripe old age.

My Mom told me about a dog (cocker spaniel) she had who ate an entire 1lb. box of mixed chocolates and was fine.

BTDT with my old chihuahua. The 8 lb bugger ate a half a bag of dove DARK chocolates that my stepmother had in her purse when she came to visit and didn’t KNOW were there (and of course, chocolate had never hurt HER dog!). I gave peroxide ASAP and rushed her to the emergency vet, where she began to heave chocolate goo all over me (I can STILL remember how gross that was). In spite of the prolific vomiting she had some seizures and they gave her activated charcoal and put her on an IV drip overnight. She was eventually ok but she was one sick little dog for a bit. No permanent damage, though - she went on to live 7 more years to the ripe old age of 16!
