Dog with small, slow bloody nasal discharge from one nostril - Update- he's gone. :(

So we just heard back from specialty clinic that the culture is growing a fungus! I am so happy to have a diagnosis that we can try to treat! It is penicillum fungus, which is fairly rare. We are going to do the first treatment this week. Basically, pup will be put under anesthesia and they will put the topical fungal treatment in his nasal cavity and rotate him on his back to allow it to treat for a period of time.

Vet said we will do the first treatment, then hopefully we will see some results. There’s still a chance that we’ll need to do the CT to do a nasal flush.

Fingers crossed this gets pup some relief!

Jingles & AO for your dog ~

A diagnosis - treatment plan and you’re on your way !!!

Happy Easter !!!

Woohooo for fungus!! I hope one and done treatment cures him.

I woukd’ve thought tumor as well with the symptoms and only one nostril inflammed.

From a scientific pov…I would why it wouldn’t spread to the other?

Fantastic update! Yay for great specialists who found the problem. I hope the treatment works quickly and your boy enjoys many more healthy years with you.

Wow! How on earth does a fungus grow up there? I hope your pup gets quick relief.

Answers! Awesome!!! Congrats on finally finding something and having a path forward–that must be such a relief!

So we had the first treatment one week ago, and it was rougher than expected. Not sure if it was the anesthesia or the treatment itself, but poor pup really struggled with coughing/gagging on drainage for about 5 days if he moved his head. He also did not want to eat – very clearly felt even worse. We were warned there would be an increase in drainage and they were right. The coughing/gagging has finally decreased in last 24 hour but drainage has not improved. If we do not see any improvement in next week, I’m not sure whether to do the second treatment or just go to the CT. I get the sense that this is uncommon enough that even the specialty vets don’t see it frequently. I seriously just want him to start feeling better!

Jingles for your dear boy ~

I’m sorry he is struggling ~

AO ~ relief is coming soon ~

((hugs)) for your worried heart ~

Do you think it is possible that the coughing/gagging is from the trach during anesthetic? I understand the drainage is worse but perhaps it’s something to keep in mind. I have heard stories of dogs going in for routine things like dentals and be off their feed following, coughing/gagging, sometimes for a week+ and it is presumably a side effect from the trach rather then from the actual procedure. I don’t know if that helps or not, just throwing it out there. I am so sorry for you both to be going through this. You are a wonderful pet owner and from where I sit, seem very heroic for your beloved dog. All dogs should be lucky to have an advocate such as yourself. I hope your sweet dog finds relief soon. It is so hard on us when they are not feeling well. We want their lives to be as free of pain and fear as at all possible. Thank you for keeping us posted.

Not the update that I wanted to provide, but we let our sweet pup go over the rainbow bridge on Sunday night.

After the first treatment, he continued to get much worse and the one-sided drainage became constant, thick bilateral drainage. The vet thought it had likely destroyed structures within the nose to cause it to become bilateral. He became very reluctant to eat even though we have been cooking him chicken breasts and other tasty food. His nose was literally disintegrating from 5 months of constant drainage. He wanted to be hand fed because it seemed that picking food from a plate/bowl hurt his nose and mouth. The next options were surgical and the vets did not have much confidence that it would be resolved. He lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks.

At the end, my husband and I knew it was time. We took him for ice cream and held him to the end. A friend that has worked at our barn for years happened to be the tech working, and it was a kind solace for our pup to see another friendly face there to provide comfort to all of us.

Our house feels so empty and we are so heart-broken, but we both know it was the right move. I know that he knew how much we loved him.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Thoughts and prayers and ((hugs)) for the family he leaves behind ~

RIP ~ Handsome boy ~ knowing you will always be loved and remembered ~

The memories of the wonderful times will return to warm your hearts when you’ve healed a bit ~

  • I’m so sorry ~ bless you for ‘helping him escape the pain ~

This is a sad story but he did have the best owners who put him first and tried to get him the best treatment. Poor
little thing to have endured so much - we have had the same decision to make many times and it is incredibly tough. You have pictures and memories and some day the time will be right to find another little healer for your hearts.

Oh I’m so sorry, you did every possible thing you could do. Rest easy sweet boy.

Oh no, this is not the update we were hoping for. I’m so very sorry. In time, may happy memories gradually replace your grief. Doodles are the absolute best! Your precious boy knew how much he was loved and he’ll live in your heart forever.

This is such sad news. You were able to give him more time to be with you, but it is never enough. Take good care.

I am so sorry to hear this update. We were all pulling for your sweet dog. I hope you are able to find peace. You did everything for him and then some.

Just wanted to say how sorry I am. Lost my cat on May 23 as well. Your dog sounds so well loved!! Just heartbreaking to see them suffer at all. I’m sure such a well loved dog had a great crossing. Take good care of yourself!

I am so very sorry to hear this. Cherish your memories and know you did everything you could and did the right thing when it was time.

So, sorry for your loss :frowning:
