It doesn’t even have to be aggressive, it just needs to be a long ear. We had one jenny that was trained/acclimated to our dogs and left them alone, but still went after stranger dogs. My minis try to go after dogs, but wind up being the same size… But if a terrier or something got in there? Not good for the dog.
My mini donkey was raised with sheep/goats but won’t let anything else in her pasture. She may be small but I have seen her roll dogs and try to stomp them. She won’t even let the cats in the field. If a dog approaches the fence line she will pace it as a warning. No dog has ever fought back so I don’t know what would happen to her due to her size. My guess is my lead gelding would join the fray as he likes her and protects her from the other horses picking on her. Guard donkey may be cheaper than new fencing. Or, as others have stated, a llama.

We’ve been dealing with the same thing for years. The matriarch of the family purchased a lot next to our farm where she warehouses her family members as they are released from prison. The lastest bunch of them allows the children to wander in our pasture and they have two vicious Pit Bulls, which chase us constantly and about a month ago, mauled our old dog in our yard and killed him.
I’ve made 18 calls to the police and when I spoke with the oldest ass of the bunch about the kids and the dogs, she threatened to kill me when I told her I would shoot the dogs if they chased me again. I let that go and attempted to speak with them again after the dog mauling. The youngest one threatened to kill me…and when I repeated her own words back to her, she threatened me again. Called the police, filed the report, went to court. Long story short, I have a protective order against her, which I know is about as good as the paper it’s written on. The dogs are still loose at times and I have no idea what to do about it. I know if they end up dead…we are dead, even though every neighbor around has a mark on their head. Even though these dogs have bitten a person and killed two dogs in the neighborhood, there are no “bad dog” laws in this state.
Following your post with interest. I would definitely give your police a try, I know ours were worthless but a state with better laws and legal repurcussions might have more enforcement. I would do something though…especially if you have small animals like dogs and cats…a pair or pack of dogs is nothing to sneeze at. I never would have thought our little old dog’s life would end the way it did, heartbreaking.[/QUOTE]
Find out who the parole officer is and tell them this story. They can put them back in jail with no problem.
I can relate, but have a slightly reversed situation. The new neighbors children love to “play” along my fence. They antagonize the dog and my horses and get everyone all worked up, and the scary dog used to bark and snarl through the fence at them (was a bit of a deterrent- like stay a couple feet back from MY fencing). I do not know what they have done, but now dog is petrified of them when they come to the fence to antagonize horses every evening. Horses will not go near the fence either when they hear the children playing… What is the point of having land anymore when the neighbors have become just as bad as the gated-community-I-can-spit-on-your-house-its-so-close type.
As for advice, my other neighbors got donkeys for a little while. Those things were so noisy, it was enough to consider moving. Not to mention our horses were petrified of the donkeys. For months, it was chaos in the riding ring (horses could SEE the donks from there) and no sleep for me with that hee-hawing all night. Luckily, the neighbors hated the noise as much as us and got rid of them after a few months.
We have dealt with roaming dogs a lot. I have Cattle dogs but I hate roaming dogs. Surprising my latest, ACD, chases the neighbours dogs if they come on the property - even though he loves all his friends who visit. We’ve been lucky as the problem neighbour doesn’t seem to have a dog at the moment.
It is certainly not the dogs’ fault as it is the idiot owner. Cattle dogs are meant to herd and will do so if not told not to. I have wanted to get a paint ball gun as well. I don’t know if I could shoot the dog with a regular gun. You can always freeze the paint balls and then they don’t explode but they hurt like crap.
I have called the RCMP (we live in Canada) and they have gone and explained to the idiots that we have the legal right to shoot their dogs. Often this wakes people up but for the idiots that don’t, SSS is the only way unfortunately. I have also called the conservation officer on someone whose dogs were chasing deer across my front yard. They got fined. My cattle dog is not allowed to chase the deer and they know it so they hang around.
For dogs that don’t chase the horses but I catch on my property, if I can catch them, I tie them up and wait for neighbour to come looking. If I can’t catch them I chase them back home with the car or the quad and a long dressage whip. Then yell at the stupid people.
Can’t fix stupid but you can neuter them.
Nancy!
I love ACD’S - I hate stupid dog owners - and I hate when dogs are allowed to harass horses, wildlife, people, cats or other dogs!!! Good Luck - its hard to get animal control to help in some of these cases. If you can catch the dogs and take them to your local shelter and the owner has to bail out the dogs with $$$ they may change their habits! Or take a video and put all over facebook…
