Doodles surrendered in NC

Earlier today, a large number (I think 20+) doodles were surrendered to a shelter near me in Burlington, NC. Based on the look of them, it was a hoarding situation, a puppy mill, or just an extremely irresponsible backyard breeder.

Within an hour they all had adoptions pending.

Maybe I should put on my flame suit, but this drives me absolutely mad. People come out of the woodwork to rescue a poorly bred, untrained, unsocialized, special needs whatevadoodle…while the other dogs there needing homes languish and die (many of whom are probably more adoptable than the doodles).

Rant over.

Are the other dogs at the shelter really more adoptable than doodles? In my experience, the only dogs left at shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The rescue orgs swoop in and take all the more adoptable dogs before anyone from the public can adopt directly from the shelter. Personally, I really don’t like doodles of any sort, but if I had to pick between one and a pit bull, I’d pick the doodle I guess.

I just checked my county shelter website to prove my point (which has been proven every other time I’ve looked there). Today there are 5 dogs listed, and only one is a pit bull. The other four are all some sort of hound mix. One of the four hounds description said it’s a transfer from another shelter. I would choose a hound over a doodle.

As the owner of three pound puppies, I can say that there are highly adoptable dogs in shelters. And no, they are not all pit mixes (though I’ve known many a nice pit). Lots of shepherd mixes, husky mixes, hounds, chihuahuas, lab mixes, cattle dogs, etc find themselves in shelters. Two of my three dogs already knew basic obedience (house training, crate training, leash walking, sit, down, no, etc) and were good with kids and other dogs.

Maybe people are drawn to the extremely needy? I would be happy that they found homes so quickly.

I have had many pound puppies too. All great dogs. Sadly shelters are full of breeds I would never consider and maybe breeds ( crosses) others have objection with as well.

That’s not the case where I live. I have had 5 adopted dogs, and only the first two came from shelters (in the 1990s). The remaining three were from rescue orgs because I couldn’t find a large, non-pit dog 1 year old or younger in the local shelters.
