A hoofpick also works well for this
I have a large one of these at the door to our mudroom and love it. It is heavy, but it does a great job, and I live in The Muddy South, where it does not freeze hard. You can order them from Amazon.
Thanks everyone! I’m all set. I went to Lowe’s last night and bought one of those trays for the boots and two 3x5 door mats. My outside door mat was just too small and my inside one was slick, so dirt just fell off of it and onto the floor, just waiting to spread its joy to the rest of my kitchen. I never knew they had those large trays for boots and that’s exactly what I got. Thanks again!
For anyone who might read this I found awesome boot trays at BJ’s the other day. Deep 2" lip made out of rubber (think rubber feed tub) for $9.99. I picked up a bunch, you can never have too many boot trays! Works well for putting dog food/water bowls on too, then I just hose of the mat every now and again or wipe up spills easy.
Just be aware, solid rubber mats, solid rubber backed mats, on plain unfinished concrete floors, like on garage floors and some mud rooms, will end up with white mold growing under those.
You can avoid most of that by scooting the mat around some, so it gets air under there.
That won’t happen with plastic or those that have holes in them to breathe, but then the holey ones let water leak thru the holes.
@Bluey Oh gross! The one we have outside appears to be solid rubber. It’s on a deck so I’m guessing it can breathe. Will have to bang it up against the fence to get mud off, so hopefully not too much mold. I’m glad you mentioned it as I wouldn’t have know what it was. Thanks!
I have one of the nylon carpet, rubber base ones on the front porch, and after it rains I have to hold it up until the water drains off, then plop it face down on the flower bed pavers, so the porch can dry, and the bottom of the mat can dry. Then I just toss it back on the porch. The one on the garage entrance doorway to the house doesn’t seem to get any moisture on the bottom, but I do check it from time to time.
