Dover and their last coupon...
What were the items?
I just randomly picked somethings that I buy frequently.

The first item I picked (Pyranha Aerosol) is cheaper at SP. It is only four cents but it is cheaper (and I get free shipping).

Next item I am picking is a Cashel fly mask. It is hard to compare because it appears they do not both have the same items, well they do not have much overlap. The designer line (patterned) with ears is $25.95 at SP and $25.99 at Dover. The quiet ride, long with ears is more at SP (32.95) than at Dover ($29.99).

Next (last item) I randomly picked is Vetrolin Liniment (I just bought some of this at Tractor Supply so figured I would check it out at these two places). SP the 32oz bottle = $12.95, Dover the 320z bottle = $12.99, SP the gallon bottle = $31.95, Dover the gallon bottle = $31.99 and there is red print that says there is an addition $5 shipping on this bottle.

Just an FYI, a lot of brick and mortar stores will price match SP and Dover as long as it isn’t on clearance/close out or the price doesn’t violate a pricing policy for that vendor.

I found the Pyranha cheaper at Dover. Looks like if you price match, if SP is cheaper it’s only by .5c and if D is cheaper it’s usually by a few dollars.

Pyranha:
Dover: $15.95

Smartpak: $18.95

I found the Pyranha cheaper at Dover. Looks like if you price match, if SP is cheaper it’s only by .5c-$2 and if D is cheaper it’s usually by a dollar or a landslide. So maybe ‘always’ wasn’t the right word. I picked some stuff that I bought recently and looked it up on both websites.

Pyranha:
Dover: $15.95

Smartpak: $18.95

Martingale Stoppers:
Dover: $1.85

Smartpak: $1.95
https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/rubber-martingale-stoppers-4145

Kerrits Breeches:
Dover: $79.99

Smartpak: $110

Except I bought mine at a brick and mortar store so don’t need to pay shipping for any of those items.

Yes, but you used the elusive sale codes. I simply went to the web site and did a search for the item.
Which is the point that every one has been making. You just pointed out a perfect example of it. Sure, on sale, if you know the code or go looking for the code it is cheaper. If you just want a can of spray and navigate to the fly spray you do not get the special pricing and it costs more.

I am sure there are things that are cheaper on both sites. You made a blanket statement that Dover was cheaper. It is not.

I didn’t use elusive sale codes. I used the catalog sale codes which are right there in hyperlink on the front page.

If you just search for the name Dover has that same breech for the same price as SmartPak.

It’s just not on closeout at SmartPak yet, apparently.

Yeah… Dover’s link is for their seasonal colors so those are on sale. Smart Pak’s link is for the base colors that are always available. Apples and oranges.

No, what Beowulf is showing you is that Dover has clearance colors. You might note that the SP breeches are not those colors. The link you showed are the same colors as the SP link that Beowulf provided in the comparison. So Beowulf is comparing clearance colors to not clearance colors to make their point.

The items I picked were random. I truly did the same exact thing on both website and did not go searching for items to make my point. I only looked for those three things and posted the results. I did not go looking in a sale catalog to see if something was on sale. I know on the SP website if something is on sale it comes up automatically.

I’m agreeing with you - just typed too quickly. I didn’t notice that they were different colors - that just makes it an even clearer point - they were different things being compared.

If I know I want kerrits full seat breeches and just type it in the search bar, I don’t get the sale price at Dover no matter what. That’s shady.

Thanks, but I didn’t look at the colors, only the text string and the catalog. They’re the same item. Here’s Dover’s price which is a colossal dollar cheaper:

Since this thread has now devolved into a DvSP debate, I’ll probably retire since we’ll be here all day comparing the multitude of flaws in both companies.
I am not a “staunch anti-Dover ambassador” and in fact order there from time to time. But I will always try SP first because I find their website much easier.

I don’t like to call. I prefer to shop entirely online.

I don’t have any reason to diss Dover. I’m a real like customer giving real live feedback on their website. They can choose to hear it or choose to lose some of my business.
I have to say that I’m with vxf (et al) here. I’ve always assumed that I’m “anti Dover” because I live in one of the areas that doesn’t have a brick & mortar store and they clearly don’t care as much about their catalog-only business. And in all seriousness, I’m not anti-Dover so much as “pro” any company that goes out of their way to support me, which is just about all of them other than Dover.

I find that shopping on the Dover site is more confusing - the “dual” prices is a frustrating model and one that I wish they would discontinue. And I don’t want to speak to someone on the phone. I far prefer being able to manage the entire order online without involving a customer service rep.

Beyond that, I HATE HATE HATE the shipping policy. Increasing the shipping price based on the dollar amount in the cart is the most antiquated, ridiculous policy of all the online retailers I frequent. Do they have to offer free shipping, like SP? No, of course not. But the fact that if I buy an expensive bridle I’m quoted a $25 shipping fee and that shipping fee is LESS for an on-sale blanket that will obviously cost more to ship? It’s just ridiculous. Someone one posted the “tenoff” code you can use to get $10 off that I now use, and this has been enough to get me shopping there when I can’t find an item elsewhere. But I will look at multiple other websites before going to Dover every single time. (On a side note - I do not want another credit card. I already have credit cards that I use and I’m not getting another).

And rarely do I find that Dover has the cheapest price, especially when shipping is figured in. Dover is often $10-25 more with shipping.

Example:
Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunters
Dover: $189.99 plus $24.95 shipping = $214.94
SP: $189.95 plus automatic free shipping = $189.95

To be fair, I can use the tenoff promo on Dover for a total cost of $204.94, but that’s still $15 more than SP.

Another example (a random fly spray I often purchase):
Farnam Endure Sweat Resistant Fly Spray 32 oz / 1 gallon
Dover: $19.99 / $69.99 (plus add’l $5 shipping)
SP: $18.95 / $61.90
With shipping included the prices look like this:
Dover: $27.94 / $89.94
SP: $18.95 / $61.90

Those are not insignificant savings. Although I will acknowledge that if I add the tenoff promo the smaller flyspray comes out cheaper ($17.94), but the larger size is still almost $20 more.

I’ve provided this feedback via multiple surveys over the years and have spoken about it with many Dover CSRs. I figure the company is well aware of how customers feel (especially? those of us nowhere near a brick & mortar store and out of “quick-shipping-range”), and just don’t care.

As noted above, I do still order items from Dover. I recently ordered the Ariat Monaco Stretch boots because Dover was the only place that was carrying the patent top version. So they do still pull me in with their better selection on some items. But if they want to get more competitive, they need to take a look at their shipping policies and the way they manage their sale prices.

Yes, sorry. I should have worded that differently. I was adding to what you had already said.

I totally agree with this. Just because we can get the sale price if we jump thru the right hoops does not mean it is right that they do it this way.

The shipping to me is the absolute kicker. That’s $25 to ship a pair of breeches that fit in an envelope.

And just to add, the 10OFF doesn’t work if you have the credit card. It’s supposed to be a “on your first purchase” deal, and if you use it and then enter a dover CC it kicks the $10 discount off.

My former BO got a gift certificate from Dover from her parents for Xmas one year. It expired as she kept it over a year. Dover let her use it anyway so when she found it she was able to use it.

I’ve always had good experiences with Dover. So has everyone else I know IRL
I used an old paper gift certificate this past year that was missing pieces and was from the 80’s. It took 2 visits to use it as no one knew how to put it in the computer the first time but the manager was there the second time and knew how.

LetItBe

Interesting it didn’t work online. I am certain that it would work in the store itself regardless what you purchased.
