Down banks

I have used the neck strap portion of a standing martingale. Nice and thin. Because of where I kerp my hands a regular 3 point breast plate generally works well

I used the neck strap portion of an older standing martingale too. I like the width, and find it fits in my hand comfortably even with two sets of reins. I ran a stretchy elastic-type string through the hole where the strap connecting noseband to girth would normally go, tied a clip to one end, and used that to clip the neck strap to my saddle. Of course that elastic string is in my colors!

I recently got the Correct Connect strap and it comes in an extra long length which is great for XC as you have more freedom than some of the other options on the market!

A few moments that can help to see. (All of these videos are longer than the intended clip, watch at your own desire. The intended clip is cued up in the links)

2 down banks in succession: (2021 - 1 min clip, stop after a minute LOL. Made Show Jumper who has schooled xc historically for mental happiness and a break from the ring)

Made horse, long format Prelim 3 day, up bank to log with drop on landing. (6 yr old Tb cross with Unknown, mare, 15 hands. 1993)

Made horse, Early season Prelim (1995) Up bank to ditch between banks, to off bank, Pine Top Farms

Now for a tiny bit of history:

One upon a time they broadcast the Kentucky 3 Day on Public television. When I was 12 (ish) in 1983 I was watching this broadcast. So as usual they showed the Lexington Bank for every rider. Going into watching this program I had been afraid of down banks, I knew this as my first pony and I were not exactly “established” at down banks and the one at the farm where he lived bothered both of us, and had led to many ugly rides down it.

So I watched the broadcast for a couple hours and it caused little Emily to get a bug up her butt. I wanted to tackle this crap, like NOW. So I got up and had my dad drive me to the barn. (** TRIGGER warning** Lack of active parenting, likely very unsafe choices and many strokes of luck not to have been injured, all forthcoming)

I tacked up Aspen and we went out to the bank on the edge of the woods alone. I must have gone down that thing at least 2 dozen times, and it was barely a foot high. First times trying it, not so hot. Many mediocre times and finally some button clicked and as the fear subsided I was able to do it more competently. And the pony got more confident as well. We rode back to the barn and I don’t think I had another serious fear moment with a down bank since then. BUT it’s important to note that the change came from within. You can jump something a thousand times, but if you don’t want to change your mindset or someone is “making” you try to tackle an issue to help, but your mind isn’t in that place… the issues can stay. It has to come from within.

I am a proponent of hanging out on a bank and popping it over and over until your brain finds the way through. But only little ones, and definitely now with a ground person with a cell phone in case of issues, and proper safety equipment.

Nice.
The middle one says

VERY Odd.

Does this link work???

If I click on the link I get the same message. But if I click on “Watch on YouTube” it opens up another window, which plays the video.
