That’s what I was afraid of. I guess I can use a measuring tape on her head and see if the local halters match up well enough to try one.
One thing I’ve noticed OP with both of my Clydes is that length wise they need a draft halter but the noseband is often too big so I always buy adjustable and sometime punch an extra hole, if needed.
She’s about 16 hands I think, maybe 16.1 but she’s really BROAD and her head, oh my!
Mine’s only half Clyde but he fits into things marked “oversize” just fine. His previous owner had a nylon halter made for him that was draft length and throatlatch, with a regular sized noseband.
Going by the pictures I’d say that’s quite a small head for a draft. A lot of the draft horse tack is made for the 18+ he giants so it migh be too big. My smaller draft does fine with oversize or WB size although the this one fits her with plenty room for adjustment:
I have found the “Oversize” (one size up from “Full” or “Horse”, one size smaller than “Draft”) fits the bill for my draftX. Good for large WB and smaller drafties.
Awesome, thank you! That’s what I was afraid of, that the “Draft” sizes would be for the gigantic drafts! I took the measuring tape out today and measured her head and the halter while on her and then I can measure the ones at the store. thank you all very much!
I have an oversized nylon one I got by mistake, I’d send it to you. Problem being, it’s a cheapy with light hardware, so if you need it to hold up… I dunno
I’m not sure what’s going on that so many are getting broken halters but I’ve owned and shown draft horses for 10+ years and have been to the big draft shows both here and in the UK so have been around thousands and i have yet to see one break a halter. Getting cast and doing some damage to whatever they’re hung up in yes, but I haven’t seen a halter get broken. It is good to have a spare though, never say never and if something does happen to your halter, well you’re unlikely to be able to borrow one big enough. The same reason I always have a handful of draft nails in a box in my trunk. If we lose a shoe at a light horse show (we’ve never lost a shoe but again, never say never) I can probably find someone to tack it on but I won’t hold my breath that they’ll have been enough nails
Of all the halters I’ve had, I like my Quilin’s the best I’m a leather halter person and I like their goods very much. I’ve had this particular one for 7 years of daily use and it’s still in great shape!
My draft cross (66% Belgian according to the DNA test) is 17 hands, probably about 1500 lbs, and wears an oversize halter. Her head is not long, but it’s very wide.
If you get a halter that has buckles on both sides of the crown, you can replace a not quite long enough crown piece with a longer one and that gives you more options.

That’s a good idea, thanks!
^You can make a crown peice out of a leather belt. Cut to size, and punch in holes on the solid side.

Thank you for the link. She actually belongs to my friend who got her so me and her other old, fat friends could ride! LOL I clean her stall mostly. I haven’t ridden her yet but another friend has. She doesn’t like mud puddles! 8-D
I sent her the link.
Well I have ridden her now, she’s very green and very strong minded and sort of feels like an elephant with her long walking stride. The large horse size (weaver) did not fit her but luckily my friend had an old halter that must have been a draft halter because it fits her OK.
Chimacum Tack (formerly in Washington state, now in Texas) can get custom draft halters for an extremely reasonable price. Beautiful, supple leather, triple stitched halters and you can request extras such as a clip on the jowl strap so it works as a grooming halter too. They will tell you and I second this: measure VERY carefully and make sure your measurement notations are legible. Otherwise you’ll get something that doesn’t fit. They can also help with finding draft and draft cross blanketsn which are really difficult to shop for because not all draft and draft cross bodies are similar - there’s often a big difference in the “drop” needed (mid back to side hem).
