draw reins or side reins for lunging only?

I always enjoy these draw reins posts! Everything we put on our horses is a gadget. If you aren’t a good rider less is better for your horse and if you are a good/experienced rider you are going to understand how to use the various tools we have. For example: I never use a martingale, running or standing, because my jumper doesn’t need one. I don’t even own one. I have used draw reins with him at various times and they have been very helpful. But, I know how to use them.

OP: the best answer probably is to have a trainer or experienced rider show you how to effectively longe. If you already know how to do that, then ask that person if side reins would be useful for your mare. And then ask them, if they say “yes,” how to use them properly and if they can help you with teaching her how to longe in them.

my first boss in the horse industry didn’t own a pair of draw reins. She rode on the Nation’s Cup team and I admired her horsemanship immensely. Second boss? Draw reins on every horse…

I only use draw reins if it’s windy and my horse has had a day off. I do want a nose job, just on my own terms. I’d never let someone use them who was a beginner. But George Morris once told me I have educated hands, so I take that as I’m allowed to use draw reins if I think I need them! LOL.

for the OP, again we don’t know your experience, but a quick YouTube could teach you how to use a Pessoa rig properly. I like them because you can go quite loose and still be effective because the horse is ultimately fighting with himself and the rig gives when the horse gives.

I like the Pessoa System

I don’t like the pessoa system. I have only seen it not used it, but to me the horse gets a pull in the mouth when the hindleg goes back.
