Dress codes

Yeah, just like they do at Planet Fitness. They have a sign in the bathroom/locker room right above the hand drier stating NO TANK TOPS.

Just curious - what about they myriad of sleeveless athletic tops out there now? When you say tank top, I think of a spaghetti strap top that I’d wear under soemthing else for a little extra coverage. There are some seriously cute athletic shirts out there now (even some from horsey brands). I personally wear a sunshirt during summer and a sweater or fleece (or something similar) during winter. But when riding not in lessons

So I keep mine at home. I ride in breeches, boots or half chaps, always a helmet. I never ride in a tank at home, I hate flies and grew up with a trainer that just wasn’t how we did it. My daughter rides similar. I have a kid leasing a horse and I told her and her mother that shirts have to be tucked in or at minimal not hand low and be baggy. I’m not a fan of tanks but I didn’t “ban” her from wearing them but DID ban the little spaghetti strap tank. When I trailer her out for a lesson with the trainer- no tanks. She showed up to prep for a show in booties shorts at the showgrounds and I told her and her mother it was not appropriate.

I’m not even going to say it is a safety issue, you can read the stories for yourself. I don’t like the look of it, I don’t think it looks presentable, it isn’t what I want on my farm while participating in horse riding activities.

You could always go the school dress code style of using finger width “Tank top straps must be at least three fingers wide at the narrowest point”.

This is a timely post. I rode in a tank top yesterday for the first time ever. The entire warm up all I could think was “if I come off my shoulders are toast”. I didn’t feel any cooler and certainly had more skin to worry about receiving unnecessary sun so I don’t think I’ll be repeating that again.

At my barn we have no real dress code, flip flops, moccasins, and open toed shoes are not allowed. While you ride you need long pants or breeches, with shoes with a heel or paddock boots/ tall boots. Any type of shirt is allowed as long as its appropriate and covers your chest.

Every set of barn rules with a dress code I’ve ever seen rather eloquently put it this way…

NO TANKS.

Its a rule, not an essay question.

Clients can come to you if they need to discuss it. But it’s your barn, your business and your call.

ours was no drooping bra straps, no butt cracks, no cleavage. Tshirts ok as long as I can see your back. And Sport/full back tank tops were fine.

A gentle way would be to say “Tank tops are not permitted during lessons”. Then you’ll have them thank you in a year when they see how ridiculous they used to look with their shoulders showing.
