Dressage Horse 'Types', Your Definition of Beautiful

my favourite “type”

I like a horse that feels safe to ride and I have to push to get going. Quick, overly sensitive, reactive horses - don’t like them at all! Good thing I like the older heavier style WB. Holsteiners are my favorite…

I like a horse who appreciates an audience  One that is happy in its work, with a big personality and extra sparkle (which is why I like Morgans

As part of my mare’s schooling today, I did the “trot down the centerline, halt at X” (through a walk because I’m really new at this.) She’d been kind of bratty before that, but she’s shown enough to recognize that move as part of a test, and I definitely felt the extra “sparkle” there. Now we just need an audience…

Same for me. Thoroughbreds and Trakehners suit me just fine!

I like the sensitive but not too difficult ones for myself, regardless of breed. But to watch I LOVE this guy, and his 3-yo son is possibly even nicer.

I have a 9-month-old filly by him and out of an appendix mare who is just perfect. Funny and smart and sensible, but still sensitive. If she is anywhere near as fun to ride as she is to play around with, and if she retains her lovely mind, I will count myself as one of the luckiest people ever. She is everything I hoped she would be and more.

I like to think I love any well-bred horse (and many who aren’t.) I love a good arab, a good TB, a good warmblood, a good fjord, a good pony! I’m not too particular.

But honestly, there are a couple particular horses I love at my barn.

This is Broadway (Bugatti x Cortana). I handwalk/turn her out on the weekends, and she is just gorgeous. Refined head, very feminine, but 100% warmblood. Her strides are long and with a lot of gliding suspension - I have to powerwalk to keep up with her big swinging WALK. And she has presence. I walked her down the aisle to my nonhorsey family, and all they could say was WOW.

I also like her daughter, Fendi SFS (no pics sorry) who’s 2 right now. She’s by Festrauch. She’s like a carbon copy of her dam, same head exactly, only a little lighter build (she’s young though.)

But honestly… I’m not picky.

well it sounded funny when I wrote it but never mind
I’m not sure about FUNNY:lol:, but I do agree with you - on the man choices too. Forget Leo DeCaprio or Brad Pitt, they’re cute little boys, but not hunky; give me a George Clooney or Sean Connery, real man type any day! Same with stallions - sure, the light weight boys are elegant, but give me a manly-man with some depth to him:winkgrin:

Good thing we all have different tastes or there would be no variety in life!

My favorite is any horse who is happy to do the work, and a light sensitive rider who can establish and maintain harmony. I really don’t want to see a horse struggling with the rider – this includes egos of talented/educated riders not tuned into their horses. So, I like many “looks” and breeds, and I especially enjoy being suprised!

Having said that: my personal favorites to work with and the horse I would put in my stall and pay the bills on will always be a thoroughbred.
Well said, and I agree 100%

after owning/riding too many horse with tons of talent that were way too big for me and a few with mental health issues I am thrilled with my 7 y.o. homebred 15-2 andalusian and a young cob that is just getting started. so I guess that is small and baroque.

I like 'em long and lean! I have a TBxHano gelding who is 17.2 and all legs and neck and ears and bounce, and I think he’s just breathtaking. But I’m also long and lean, so it fits my proportion. I’ve also got a “square” type young Oldenburg who is 15.3, and is just so perfectly put together he’s the one that steals the attention. But I do look a bit silly on him.

Ahh, legs!

Modern type warmbloods. Light and elegant looking.

Any horse that can float, with three good gaits.

I’ve seen this in person with a QH pony, an Arabian, about a half a dozen Thoroughbreds, and some warmbloods.

Whatever the size/ breed/ registry of the horse, true self-carriage is always thrilling to see.

I think this youngster pictured here is pretty darn close to the “perfect” dressage type. Of course he is still young so only time will tell.

Hmm, this is a toughy. I really like a lot of different types for dressage. I think a lot of different types of horses can bring really stunning differences to the dressage ring.

But, let’s say I could build my perfect horse… I grew up in the saddleseat world and still love the saddlebred. I know it’s not the standard in dressage, but there are a lot that don’t make it to the saddleseat show ring that look like slightly more refined warmbloods.

So, let’s say a saddlebred of slightly heavier type with a less extreme neck and strong hind end that has a very fluid movement (many of them do but are shod and trained to move in a more up/down fashion). I just love the way they naturally move and think. Perhaps a saddlebred warmblood cross. Hmm, yes, I like that too. When I get tons of money, I will breed my perfect horse, haha.

Also, I really like the way that Andreas Helgstrand’s new stud, Carabas, looks. Yum.

So yeah, I like a flashy mover. So sue me = ) You can take the girl off the saddlebred, but you can’t take the saddlebred out of the girl, haha.

…I would consider a flashy warmblood too, for sure. Shoot, I like 'em all = )

I’m a “neck girl,” myself. And then after that, I want a nice solid, kinda heavy body, that moves lazy; relaxed, but powerful. Springy in slow motion. The old style WBs are my favs; none of this sissy modern stuff for me.

Give me a nice TB any day!

Yay, thanks everyone for replying. It’s neat to see other people’s ‘definition of beautiful.’

I love big necks. I’m a neck fanatic. But, as you’ve seen the example of my ‘perfect horse’ here is an example of I horse that has a nice neck, but either doesn’t or isn’t able to come onto the vertical:

Copy and paste that link. Scroll down to the very last horse, a GP Schoolmaster.

Is that his build, or is that training? He looks stiff, to me, and I would prefer the horse posted earlier any day.

I like your first posted photo!

I too love the heavier ol style warmbloods, and baroque horses…

Compact build and baroque, but also with athleticism and gaits for dressage.
