Dressage Trainers in Northern Ca

I’m in Sacramento and have had a heck of a time finding a good dressage instructor with school horses. Do any of the above have school horses?

ETA: please PM me, I don’t want to hijack the thread. Thanks!

If you want to commute to either the livermore area or turlock, I reccomend Jannelle Dunn.

North of Sac, I know one in grass valley and one in chico that are high reccomended (pm me if you interested, I don’t ahve their names at hand).

All 3 of the trainers here are good with non-traditionals - non-traditional horses and people that don’t necessarily “look” like your typical dressage riders. Work well with adults etc.

I am(sadly) long gone from California, but I wanted to add that either Livermore or Turlock would be doable from Stockton. I lived in Stockton for several years (my 20 year old son was born in Stockton) and went to Cal State-Stanislaus in Turlock and it was a quick 40 minute car ride south on Highway 99.

Livermore is probably the same (depending on the time of day), but west (and maybe a little south) of Stockton instead of just south.

You guys are so lucky to have such a wealth of instruction available.

sacramento to el dorado county area (foothills) is where i am looking.

Hello- I realize I’m resurrecting a very old thread but this is what came up in my search. I’m hoping for a recommendation on a good dressage coach with horses that I can come in and lesson on. I’m a h/j rider who is still new to the area but in the past have had “refresher” rides with good dressage instructors to keep my flatwork tuned up. I would love to ride a schoolmaster and am willing to pay for that opportunity.

I’m in San Jose and am comfortable driving up to an hour for a really good program. Thanks in advance!

osg, look south … don’t know if school horses are available but check out Villa Rosa, and I was going to suggest American Sporthorse, [was: but sadly see that Sandy has passed (I really need to keep up better) and the farm is closed.] … and thanks to folks who told me the farm is still going (saw a web page that said it was closed) … am updating. Check 'em out!

Thanks AllWeather! Hollister isn’t too far at all.

lots of great suggestions so far.

Sending a PM on places to avoid off these lists.

Sandy’s daughter Anne is running American Sporthorse. The farm is NOT closed.

^^^ Yep, American Sport Horse is still going.

As noted above - American Sporthorse is very much open, run by Sandy’s daughter Anne. Tracey Lert also runs her business out of the facility.

Katie Hoefs is at Gilroy Gaits; I don’t recall who is teaching at Red fox, but worth checking out.

Juliet Clarke has lesson horses at Rancho Gavilan.

Of the options mentioned Villa Rosa and Tracey Lert are the most experienced, followed by Katie, then Juliet. You might also check out the east bay - Yarra Yarra, Greenville and there is a place in Sunol - the name escapes me - Ariba something?
