Dressage!!!

It says the top 7 teams and the 11 highest-placed riders not otherwise participating as the qualified team members. (bolding mine)

It’s a little confusing. I guess in this case, the “qualified” means for the GPS phase, not qualified for the games in general.

It sure makes a lot more sense for the riders to be able to go on. Good.

I don’t follow dressage, when did they switch from the 4 rider team/drop score format? And what was the reason for changing to the current format?
Could have this wrong, but I thought it was done so more teams could participate. Like there were a limited number of spots total, so fewer rider per team meant more countries could come. But that is just some weird memory I have and I’m not sure it is correct!

I had to replay Anky’s final moments as I thought I just missed her salute, but guess not. Maybe a wave to the crowd counts the same?!

I’m watching the dressage replay online… there is no commentary, so you can only hear the ambient arena noises. why is it that we can hear so many of these horses breathing so heavily? is that common and nothing to be alarmed about?
If it’s the same as the eventing Dressage, they have the flower boxes mic-ed. So you def get some close up sound!

Yes- qualified means for the GPS phase. They are both still eligible as individuals.

I am only just watching the replay as live just wasn’t working for me, time wise, and have to say that I am so impressed with the Denmark rider (Kasprzak?) having such a nice go in that horrible downpour! Very admirable, and such a good score too.

If that is your preference, why not just mute your computer during the rides? Since I am watching both Live and TV, I always have one or the other muted.

It is very easy to do. Just click on the little megaphone thingy in the lower right hand corner and your sound goes off. Click again and the sound comes back.

Thanks. I still think the old format is the better way. And after 3 consecutive gold medals I think Anky does whatever she wants. Although Salinero can be so unpredictable I suppose her mind may be on him and not saluting the judges.

Well thanks for that:winkgrin:

I also thought that to move on as an individual you had to have at least 70%, which J. Brooks did not get. I thought I read she got 68%, but I am totally confused anyway.

Can anyone hook me up with a link to the score breakdowns by movement? I’d like to see where/how Laura was so penalised - I’m wondering if the judges are coming down hard on short necks and closed throatlatches.

I’m watching the replay because I was not getting up at 3 am. I just watched Carl Hester’s ride, not knowing who it was, an saw something interesting in the slo mo afterwards. When you look at the extended trot in slo mo, the front and hind end are not together, the hind legs are a half a beat behind the front legs and not moving in diagonal pairs! The hind legs were dragging behind, and the front legs kept going forward for longer.

There is no minimum score- never has been. Top 11 riders not qualified for the GPS by virtue of being on one of the top 7 teams will move on regardless of score.

Several reasons, the first being that big horses are prone to breathing problems.

The second is that when a horse with a big neck is overbent (and I am leaving the definition of overbent to be overbent for that neck’s conformation), the windpipe becomes smaller and breathing more difficult. (One of the “horrors” of rollkur. Note the quotes to avoid controversy, please.)

Last is not a reason, just to point out that noise when the air goes OUT is not a bad thing; noise when the air goes IN is.

Hope that helps.

I also think those mics are cranked up to sensitive enough to catch a fly fart. I imagine a group of runners going by would sound like they were all dying.

I was sort of glad the horse spooked the entire way out of the ring. Meaning that if you’re going to have such a mega-disaster befall you, it was better (silly word in this context) that it be a true upset that lasted a long time and the horse was obviously shying left & right (literally) all the way out of the arena; it wasn’t just 1 or 2 blow-ups that cost you everything in 2 short seconds.

Know what I mean?

(yeah, yeah, grasping at straws here, but still…)
I know what you mean and I agree. He really did come unstuck, and somehow it is better to know that it wasn’t just an intentional disobedience.

I’d be interested in seeing score breakdowns also; but Laura’s horse came off his lead behind going up the diagonal and it took a stride or two to fix it.

Although, one would think that a salute would be automatic because of her lengthly experience riding at this level. I thought it looked like poor sportsmanship in a way. Not a huge deal, but still, somehow not right…

I just read somewhere that Anky’s husband was taken to the hospital that day and she was upset, so perhaps that contributed to the memory lapse, although it sounds as though she waved instead?

I saw it that she seemed to spot something up in the stands and waved energetically, then bobbed her head in a quick salute while her right arm was still in the air. Perhaps a blonde-highlights moment?

Sjef was taken to the hospital today?

EDIT: YES YOU’RE RIGHT, BAC:

“It has been very difficult,” she explained. "My husband (and Dutch team trainer Sjef Janssen) fell ill today. He has the flu, but because he had an operation for a tumor last November, I had to get someone to be with him this morning. He is okay but it was a big worry for me. I blocked it out while I was in the ring but now I am thinking about it.

“This is the first time in my seven Olympics Games that he has not been here to watch me,” she added tearfully.

Awww. Maybe she was waving into the camera at C hoping Sjef would see it.
