Anyone who uses Durasole have an issue with it causing horse to shed MORE frog and sole? I have been using it with my horse for several months; and it seems to make them tougher temporarily but then every couple weeks since I have been using it she all the sudden starts shedding frog and sole and is left with soft feet again.
It’s not that they are shedding more, it’s that they have more to shed, as the Durasole allows/causes the sole to build up.
Are you using it on the frog?
Is the environment going from dry dry dry then wet? How often are you using it after the “loading dose”?
I’m using it every couple days. All over sole and just along edges and crevices of frog
I had the same issue–it was almost like the Durasole made the top layer of the sole tough but brittle, and that whole layer would then pop out after a few weeks.
Frizzle, Thats it exactly. Its building up a false sole and then it falls off after a while and I am back to soft sole. Guess I need to try something else for sole hardening.

well, the sole sheds naturally, so it would be doing this regardless.
what’s worked for me is to do COBRA-HOOF FREEZE (which IMHO works much better than durasole) at the beginning of the week and then an application of farrier’s fix around the entire hoof 2-3x a week.
Thanks Beowulf. Those both have interesting ingredients I will order them and give it a try. Farrier always just says Venice Turpentine which Farrier Fix has in it anyways.

Just to forewarn you, the Farrier’s Fix is kind of sticky… I find it does a great job of killing thrush but I always apply it AFTER I ride and let it dry… it will collect dirt.
I had really good luck with the COBRA this spring, especially since it was so wet (MA, we had SO MUCH SNOW!) and the hooves got soo soft. The Cobra helps the sole really harden/callous, the frog won’t shed much at least it didn’t with me. I find now my farrier actually has to take a tiny sliver of frog and sole each time he comes, which he didn’t have to do before.
Char, I’ve switched to plain old venice turpentine, or iodine. I don’t use either very often, but sometimes when it’s wet and muddy, the hooves can use a little help!
