Dutch harness horse drama. Update major mare/ foal neglect Nov 2023 post 1782 Update Kate Shearer responds post 1930 Nov 25/23

It’s a basic safety issue. I wouldn’t let anyone wearing flip flops be around my horses until they put on appropriate footwear.

I think a lot of horse people would pick up on the footwear, tbh. It’s so ingrained in most of us to never do that!

My BO often wears sandals around the barn in the summer and even though she’s typically not handling horses, it still makes me cringe…just the thought of open footwear at the barn  it’s her barn, so I don’t care what she wears, but proper footwear was really something that was emphasized in my learning as a child and has really stayed with me!

I’ll admit, I do the same. Yes, I know about footwear safety (definitely got that drilled into me as a kid) but as a BO, I’m frequently running out to throw some more hay or check water…something that doesn’t remotely involve touching the horses.

Unfortunately sometimes that does end up with me touching the horses since they seem to get themselves into trouble at those exact moments LOL

But - I definitely wouldn’t intentionally do it with clients around.

I said absolutely no such thing. I said you are promoting your breeding business, which you clearly are. Read for comprehension. You can post all the pictures you want.

Not to argue, but just curious how she is promoting her business if she’s just responding to posts about her breeding program. She didn’t initiate the thread.

I have slip on barn clogs for this reason.

I’d have to agree. We did ask and she isn’t soliciting our business. I do find it a very interesting business model. 100 per cent donor mare and AI sperm in low dollar recipient mares parked out in low cost of living areas. Foals sold in utero and presumably off the payroll after weaning. I expect a straw of semen goes further in the lab than in a broodmare operation. It gives you way more flexibility in bloodlines than if you owned the breeding stock. And no facilities maintenance costs, and no time spent on horse care.

Of course it’s not possible to do this if other breeding operations aren’t doing the hard work of creating real hands-on programs that produce high end stallions and dam lines.

What a blast from the past that thread was! 557 replies and Popeye K’s scores never got posted :joy:

Now I’m curious!!! And man…I was a hunter for many years and forgot how chonky we kept them!

I know almost nothing about your life. I saw in the video that you clearly knew was being shot for an interview to be published that you were wearing flip flops while handling clients horses.
It does not take being in pony club to know that wearing flip flops around horses is very unsafe.

What you (general) want to do at your barn around your horses is one thing. But to wear flip flops while handling other people’s horses seems like very poor horsemanship to me.

This is a horse forum, so I think commenting on crappy horsemanship is allowed.

Plus, we here on COTH love a good pile on!

Do I think wearing flip flops is a good idea around horses? No. But at some point you’re tearing someone apart for the sheer joy of it when there are plenty of other things to discuss in an adult manner that matter much much more.

Once the topic of a thread turns up to participate the level of discourse usually rises (or falls) to the level set by that person.

Or, we can be making sure that if any of her clients google her they will now know that she is putting them in danger of a lawsuit if she gets her toes removed by their horse while she is hanging out in their stall in flip flops, because no one expects the professional braider they hired to have such a serious lack of very basic horsemanship.
You look at it your way, I will look at it my way.

Someone who has been to law school as she has, knows she’s putting her toes in danger at her own risk and there’s no reason to warn the entire internet or continue hounding about it. Especially since there’s plenty of other things to discuss that matter much much more. I mean, the assumption you make to justify the focus on the flip flops that someone is going to read this entire thread and then suddenly hit the flip flop part and THAT is when they don’t do business with her?

She went to law school and knows that it is very frowned upon to claim you are a lawyer when you are not, and she does that, so why would anyone think she even slightly imagines wearing flip flops around horses is at her own risk?

If I knew I was going to be photographed or recorded, I’d for sure wear the right gear, but I have to laugh at all the ridiculous things I’ve worn (or not worn) around horses. Spending a lifetime with them, day in, day out, I’ve worn everything from professional work wear, formal wear in a gown and heels, PJs and slippers during exhausting night checks, flip flops or sandals when I was going to the car to leave and didn’t expect to have to go into the barn, running out half naked to things I’ve caught on foaling cam, essentially choosing to be half naked in shorts and sports bras during hellacious coastal summers, to seasons up north where I looked like the Michelin puff man in the winter due to my sad intolerance to cold. Thankfully the horses couldn’t verbally complain.

I once chased 4 loose horses down the road wearing pjs. No bra. My fiance chased our dog almost 1/4 mile into town wearing underpants and muck boots.

We have all done stupid things around horses.

Let me word my thoughts on the flip flops a little differently.

If I was going to hire a braider, I would prefer to hire one that had basic horsemanship safety skills. Willingly wearing flip flops while dealing with clients horses is not that.

I once zipped myself in to a snow suit, over my pjs and wound up driving a sale horse, in snowy -20 degrees, to a buyer 100 miles away. Their child tried the horse, they wanted some time to discuss it while I sat in my truck. They decided that yes, they want the horse and we should all go out to celebrate at a restaurant where we sat in front of a huge fireplace. I was sweating like it was a sauna and couldn’t even zip it down a little bit while pretending that it was all good! I was finally on my way home with an empty trailer 12 hours after the day began. That’s my best horse sale story and I didn’t even get out of my pajamas
