Dutch Mare and Oldenburg Gelding Being Sent to Slaughter on Monday

I was just contacted by Connie Cook and Rochelle Worden of “Another Chance 4 Horses”. They have two warmbloods that have been purchased by a slaugherhouse broker at the New Hope auction in Pennsylvania. One of them appears to have a Dutch brand and the other is an 11 year old Oldenburg gelding.

Unfortunately, we just heard about this, and the deadline for being to help them is by 12:00 on Sunday the 12th (it’s now Saturday the 11th).

I put up the links and e-mail addresses on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Oldenburg-Horse-Breeders-Society-and-Weser-Ems-Ponies/144874792216944?ref=mf. Hopefully someone can help these horses out.

wow, the mare is really pretty!! Sucks someone just dumped her off. Wish I could help but way to far away to take her in.

I would take her, I have the space and I am not too far from there - but $1200 for a horse that is off at the trot I think that is a bit much. Might be a nothing issue, might be something permanent. For an unknown pasture ornament I can’t do $1,200.

Of course I KNOW it can happen to any of my horses at any time, but to pay for something that is already unknown is a little scarey.

I would be happy to make a contribution for this mares sale and/or transport. Please let me know how I can help.

If I could take them, I would in a heartbeat.

Jumper Breeder, they sent me these e-mail addresses:
christy(at)ac4h.com, rovergrl(at)hotmail.com, info(at)ac4h.com, kyfarmgirl67(at)yahoo.com

I don’t know exactly how this works, but I would imagine the $1200 is the price the slaughterhouse is willing to pay for them, and that would be the amount the broker would accept in order not to send them.

I wish I could help or take them too, but I also can’t. It’s not easy for sure.

Boy be careful. I totally understand the want to save these horses, but I’m not sure that they are always saved, even when the money is all paid. There were some real weird dealings around an old pony mare that the pony community tried to save.

Personally I will not be sending AC4H money ever again.

Ditto this. Do a search, lots of old threads, both here and off course. And, I may be wrong, but no slaughterhouse is paying $1200 for any one single animal today. Do the math after you read the old threads.

I do jingle for this mare and gelding. Poor guys. :frowning:

Caitlin

They would bring less than half that at the sale. This is the special blackmail rate that the broker is famous for.

Thanks for the warnings. I hope that the AC4H is not just trying to dupe us all here. I would imagine the broker could not be trusted, especially with the amount he is asking for, but they are telling us that they are a rescue society.

If anyone else knows of a bad history with this group, please let us all know. I hate that these horses are caught in the middle of this.

I will make a home offer for the Dutch mare. I will contact them to let them know if she still needs a home by the deadline tomorrow. If anyone would like to help out, that would be appreciated (I can provide numerous personal and professional references)! I would assume AC4H would collect contributions…? I am working on a shipping quote to Alberta, it should be somewhere around 2k.

I am aware that the price is inflated by the broker, however, whatever can be done to save this mare is worthwhile.

I’d asked to see a closeup of the brand if saving a Dutch mare is what tugs your heart strings.

Yeah…be careful. You might wanna do a bit more research before signing a check over. There are so many scammers and cons out there that pluck at people’s heartstrings. You might wanna read through this first…Just a thought…

Thank you for the heads up, I will do some further investigation. Is there anything else I should know or any other places to do some research on the validity of AC4H?

This mare seems much like a very special mare that I lost last spring. She was my heart horse and if I can save one in her memory I’d like to do that.

Thanks Kathy for posting that. That is exactly how I was contacted by these people. Not good. I’ll take down the Facebook posts. Leah A, if you do contact them, please let us know what you find out.

I’m getting very angry about this whole situation.

I just read the story Kathy posted…I have to say that, while there was a SERIOUS lack of professionalism on the part of the rescue, it is an unfortunate truth that some rescues do establish a relationship with a particular kill buyer who will deal with only them in a very specific manner. In the end, I want to make a difference to this particular mare. I can’t save them all but I can save some…

I will keep working on this…

I did purchase a broker horse through ac4h quite some time ago. I think that if one person is paying for the horse and arranging shipping home then there isn’t a problem (except over inflated prices, no the slaughter house is not paying 1200 for a meat horse). If there are contributions going in from multiple people then I would be vary careful and watch to make sure ALL contributions are recorded and go toward the horse.

I paid for my own horse, arranged shipping home and didn’t have a problem. I would NEVER just send them a contribution though for a horse for fear the money would “disappear”.

You do have to remember though; sometimes, just sometimes, these guys are there for a reason. Hate to sound cold but be prepared for a permanently lame horse just in case.

COTH is a great place to do research on AC4H. There are many threads about it.

Here are a couple of links just from this forum:

be careful! and no the meat price is not 1200 for the horse…

ac4h does mark up the horses, they usually get them from brian somebody who is a kill buyer

save a horse but, no you are spending more then you must, there are horses all over in auctions, warmbloods too for a fraction of the price…and probably local to most of you
