Educate me about hoof boots (mainly for trail riding, but also for extreme weather like ice)

Again, it comes down to what fits. I am currently using Flex boots on the hinds. They don’t fit her front feet , so she has Renegades on the front. When the Flex boots wear out, I will go back to Renegades on the hinds. I have tried several different manufacturers. Bottom line, the clunky-ish looking Renegades are what work for my horse.

I have cavallos for my mare and like how they fit and how they stay secure with the fully enclosed style. I also have questions about winter turnout.
My mare needs boots for tender front feet. I’m wondering if it’s safe to leave her Cavallos on long term with studs, in the winter for slippery and ouchy surfaces? I have no experience with studs but she’s had her boots on and off for a couple years. Now, she needs the protection full time. I’m wondering if you have any advice?
She’s also been recently diagnosed with ringbone in the backs. What about 4 boots for full time turnout? Would you put studs in the fronts or backs? Thank you in advance if you have time to answer this one.

My BO scraped the paddock down to frozen mud and ice today. I put my horse out with four studded Trek boots (Cavallo). He lives out, and it’s not the first time he’s wearing Treks for turnout.

I will take them off as soon as we get a snow cushion.

I wouldn’t use Cavallos without studs as they’re more slippy on ice and hard packed snow than bare feet.

Thank you. I wondered if it was OK to stud both sets. I was thinking of removing the hinds when there’s better traction as well. The fronts need to stay for her general comfort, but also good to know that it’s OK to keep them studded. Really appreciate the feedback

Dumb question but, with the recent snow fall, why would your BO scrape the paddock down to frozen mud and ice?

We lost almost all of our snow to the rain, and he’d wanted to scrape before it started snowing but couldn’t get to it. Plus he has a soft spot for my senior and wanted to reduce the spring mud for him. Two other paddocks got scraped too. While I say frozen mud and ice, the ice is small patches. Overall it’s much better footing for the horses.

Just came in from a ride in the snow wearing the Flex boots. Part of my deepish and soft, part of it packed driveway that had been blown out.

Thumbs up so far. No snow collected in the foots and he was confident and striding out on all footing. Boots didn’t twist, which I’ve had problems with before.

So, review of 1 if it helps!
