When you said the entire facility was in a seven day quarantine, what facility are you referring to?
The comparison to covid, and the idea that it could, like ehv lie latent until stressed⊠Is very troubling.
Thanks. It was a hellish four days, and his last hours were a literal horror. Which is why people being cavalier scares the crap out of me.
Side note Re: the covid comparison ⊠while I donât know a ton about EHV1 in horses in particular, thereâs a fundamental difference between herpes viruses and covid. With the notable exception of retroviruses such as HIV, RNA viruses donât usually hang around and cause latent infections in the same way that DNA viruses like herpes can. Immunocompromised people with covid can have prolonged illness and remain infectious much longer than an otherwise healthy person would, but people with covid wouldnât be expected to have a true latent/dormant infection that would be asymptomatic for months or years and then reactivate and be symptomatic and contagious the way herpes viruses can even in otherwise healthy people (think cold sores, or chickenpox/shingles).
So while people with covid can certainly have lasting effects as a result of the virus and the associated immune response, there shouldnât be a risk of those people having reactivation of their prior infection (although they could potentially get reinfected).
Well said @Sticky_Situation .
Herpesviruses have no similarities to coronaviruses. Review the veterinary links above for more info on EHV-1. There are many endemic diseases of animals (and humans) and yes they are scary, but these outbreaks are not new.
Sending jingles to everybody impacted by the Thermal and LAEC show outbreaks. I was at Thermal during Week 2, now Iâm glad I wasnât able to make it back out there for Week 4.
I know one lab in Chicago is doing some very promising work on novel vaccines for bovine herpesviruses. I asked the PI after his talk about EHV and he did mention that they had been contracted by a vaccine company to work on EHV as well. I think they were starting trials in cattle at the time - unfortunately this doesnât help out any horse owners at the moment because theyâre probably still years away from approval.
I wasnât saying the part about lying there dormant then being reactivated was similar to Covid. The similarity to Covid was the feature that for some horses, infection was a mild respiratory illness, and for others it was severe or fatal (EHM).
All good! I was just clarifying for @Angela_Freda because she mentioned how terrible it would be for covid to do that (and sheâs not wrong that it would be terrible, but it fortunately shouldnât be possible for a coronavirus to do that!)
This is a fairly simple but informative site for info:

I unfortunately know way more about EHV-1 than I ever wanted to as my then yearling filly was part of the outbreak outlined in this article. She was also one of the ones who showed some minor neuro symptoms that they mentioned and also a very bizarre blood clotting disorder that they didnât mention. My filly did survive as did all the other horses in part due to excellent care. They have had all sorts of minor continuing health issues though like skin disease, and hives. My filly spent time at New Bolton with cellulitis and later on was treated for pneumonia. Stuff her immune system would have easily fought off before would hit her hard.
My filly is almost 2 now and seems to finally be back to normal with no lingering issues and no random illnesses popping up like before so hopefully this is finally all behind us. The point of all this is you really want to do everything you can to prevent this from happening to your horse. If that means sitting out a few weeks of the show season, do it.
What a terrible experience for you. Iâm so sorry. And yes, a cavalier attitude is inexcusable.
What Iâve read is that the neuro symptoms may be caused by blood clotting issues in which small blood clots damage the blood vessels along the spine and in the brain.
I think anticoagulants along with anti inflammatory meds and anti virals are part of the treatment.
Oh yikes. Hansen Dam is supposedly now quarantining etc but I didnât know your barn had been impacted too.
Breathtaking irresponsibility pretty much hits the nail on the head. Thereâs always another show but our horses canât be replaced.
Why are people being quiet about which trainer moved from Thermal to LAEC without the 7 day quarantine and spread this? It seems like everyone knows who did it. Have they apologized? Are they remorseful? Are they being fined?
Well, USEF is not happy. Web version of email sent out earlier today:

Sound like penalties are comingâŠgood.
Because itâs AC3. Infuriating to say the least.
HG also rode a horse with a fever in the first round of the derby at thermal before anyone noticed and she was not allowed to compete in the second round.
Same reason as we never see anyone set down for drugging, LTD, or anything else related to horrid horsemanship. These trainers bring upwards of 20 horses to the shows consistently.
ok what, and they knew?? THAT is shameful.
Itâs getting around that Archie Cox was one of the trainers who violated the 7 day quarantine to come to LA, but there are reportedly 1 or 2 others who did the same.
I believe that horse was in the quarantined barn. I wasnât there that week, thankfully, and reports are kind of all over the place. I heard this from someone who was at the show.
Who is AC3 and HG?
