I’m concerned because alot of the English Discipline events/shows/competitions are still scheduled and on.
Even this weekend, tomorrow, there are several around. They think it’s a Cutters Problem Only

kewpalace’s link is providing updated information daily. I had a dressage show scheduled in Sonoma County Sunday that’s been cancelled because of this. My barn just went on voluntary quarantine today. I wonder what will happen with some of the big shows coming up–two day show in Vacaville, Shelly Siegel in Santa Rosa over the next few weeks.

One of our local vets just posted this on their website. It doesn’t state where the horse is located though.
Update 5/19/11 3PM Another update: A dressage horse that attended the Cheyenne Dressage show on May 14th came down with a fever and tested positive for EHV-1. The horse had been exposed to the family’s cutting horse (who attended the Ogden cutting show) prior to attending this show. The dressage horses that attended this show are now being asked to monitor their horses’ temperatures in case they came in contact with the infected horse. The news is ever changing…keep checking back for more updates![/QUOTE]
This horse was from Colorado, though there was some skepticism about the story regarding the turnaround time for a positive EHV1 test.
Here’s the latest from Colorado Dept. of Ag:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 19, 2011
EHV-1 Update
Eight Confirmed Cases of EHV-1 in Colorado Horses
LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Colorado Department of Agriculture continues to investigate the spread of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) in the state.
As of 5/19/2011, 1pm:
8 confirmed cases of horses with EHV-1
Two horses, which tested positive for EHV-1, were euthanized after showing severe neurological signs associated with the disease.
22 suspect cases. Suspect cases are those horses that are believed to have been exposed to EHV-1 but confirmatory tests are still pending.
10 quarantine and hold orders have been issued in 6 counties (Bent, Boulder, Larimer, Mesa, Morgan & Weld)

Hmm, looks like I forgot to hit ‘submit’ on my post. Update on the Utah unnamed facility with the 5 confirmed cases as of yesterday: Today’s news states 2 of the 5 confirmed cases were at the cutting in Ogden, and there are additional suspected cases (not yet confirmed as of the press update) in the same facility.
NorCal peeps: another update, it’s now in the Gilroy area:
Update from PenEq:
Update 5/19/11 530PM As we have seen today, information on the EHV-1 outbreak is ever changing. As we now have horses outside of the cutting world testing positive AND horses within the Bay Area testing positive (most recent positive test results this evening from a horse on the Gilroy/Hollister border), we are now suggesting that our clients restrict travel for the next 7 days. This will give officials working on the outbreak time to further identify exposed horses. We will advise on travel after next week as more information becomes available.
Maybe this already got posted, but good up to date summary with state by state breakdowns is here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/nahss/equine/ehv/ehv_2010_sitrep_051911.pdf
Suppose there will be a new one come tomorrow, when most of you read this!
Article about AHC and AAEP working with USDA to track the cases is here:
http://quarterhorsenews.com/index.php/news/industry-news/10411-american-horse-council-and-aaep-work-with-usda-to-facilitate-coordination-of-ehv-1-and-ehm-case-reporting.html
That seemed to have old information even when published - yesterday a.m. CA was reporting 13 cases confirmed; the information on this USDA report is behind. Good for an overview (I like the simple layout!), but for current information it’s probably best to check your State’s Food/Ag site.
A local barn, McKinney, TX, has gone on lockdown citing a confirmed case in Pilot Point, TX. Has anyone heard of this one? I have emailed to see where they got their info but I haven’t heard back.
I only heard Weatherford… Pilot Point is a popular shipping hub so that would be bad news for sure.
I understand from my vet’s office there are three confirmed cases in NM, one died. (2 in ABQ area and one in Hobbes). All horses were either at Ogden cutting event or later shipped with a horse who had been at that event. So, significantly, the quarantine of horse at Ogden won’t be a big enough net.
My barn in Santa Fe is on voluntary lockdown.

I am hoping it is mis-information. I certainly don’t want to be the one to start rumors but I was wondering what others have heard.
I did hear of the case in Weatherford.
I have emailed the BO to see where she got the info on Pilot Point.
Please keep us updated on Pilot Point - that hit right home!
I drove through Castro Valley yesterday to see that the Rowell Ranch Rodeo was still on, lots of people lots of horses.
Update from cdfa.ca.gov

The positive confirmed cases are located in the following counties: Amador(1), Glenn(2), Kern (2), Los Angeles(1), Napa(1), Placer (2), Plumas (1), and Stanislaus (3).
WSDA updated this morning to show 5 positives in WA state as of today. http://agr.wa.gov/FoodAnimal/AnimalHealth/HotTopics.aspx
The stupid news out of Spokane just posted a story with the headline “3Confirmed Cases of Deadly Horse Virus in Pullman”. I don’t this is true (well I’m praying it’s not), but I really dislike how the news stations about putting out stories that aren’t accurate and freaking me out!
ETA: It’s true. Two more confirmed cases @ WSU VTH. So that’s three total.

According to this from the Oregon VMA, the second Oregon horse was not at the Ogden show but traveled in a trailer with horses from the show.

The organizer was interviewed by a few tv stations yesterday. His attitude was very casual and he even said “The rodeo Must go on and it Will”. He was a really poor choice as an interview subject and is a prime example of why this virus will not easily be contained. I sent an email to CBS 5 and let them know they couldn’t have chosen a worse representative of the horse community to speak with about the virus.
He said they would hand out flyers to people as the enter the grounds and and tell them to be careful. Thank you Russ Fields for putting your very special rodeo ahead of the health of horses. Nice.

The only response I got from the BO is that the new trainer told her about it.
It sounds like this is possibly mis-information and I wouldn’t worry too much until you hear something from an actual authority or a more reliable sourse.
I sure hope they are wrong.

I found this interesting, please let me know if it has been posted already, I can remove it.
