EHV1 outbreak information

The Utah state vet has confirmed 5 cases as of 6pm today. All are located at one facility in the state.

http://ag.utah.gov/news/EquineHerpesOutbreak.html

My barn is doing voluntary quarantine for 10 days… nobody in or out… after that we will see how things are going. I am happy to be over cautious, and yes there have been NO POSITIVE reports in my area but I know full well people haul all over the planet for events so a safety stand down is fine.

btw, I truly appreciate Michelle posting all her whereabouts and that of her horse and trailer on FB. Getting accurate information out is really important. I am sorry for her loss.

This thread is long & I’d like to repeat my post - has anyone heard of a confirmed case in Temecula, CA @ Galway Downs? This was at a Western show. Info was from a vet and two trainers, so not a random rumor from “somebody”. I totally don’t want to panic, which is why I would like confirmation.
Anyone??

Just read the Utah link. Is there a reason they don’t say the name of the facility with five confirmed cases, or where it’s located?

No matter what state we’re talking about, wouldn’t it be more helpful to be more specific?

From Komo 4 news in Western Washington:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/122198969.html

I don’t agree with the overreacting comment considering the fact that hundreds of horses from all over the country were at that Cutting show. That is alot of potential horses exposed.

No show, clinic or lesson is worth my horses getting sick:no: I am locking down my small farm…although I am worried about my horse in training…his trainer is also a farrier!!

Voldemare, I heard that today there was a confirmed case in Temecula, from someone who likely shares the vet that did the diagnosis. I don’t know any more than that.

I don’t know why that would be useful information- my reading is that all of the cases board at one particular facility, and I would surmise it’s one of the cutting horse trainers since the NCHA cutting is the source. Vets and barn owners/trainers/and ag department will have already been all over notifying and/or tracking down any horse that might have been at that barn. That said, if I see anything about which facility it is I’ll be happy to post it.

I would imagine patient privacy laws prevent that, unless the owner(s) themselves state that it is their horse/facility that tested positive. I know lots of vets who are VERY strict about patient confidentiality; even when my own horse was in the hospital and had visitors, they refused to give anyone any information unless I confirmed it was ok ahead of time.

I scratched Colorado Horse park h.t. If this EHV-1 outbreak scare is over in 2 weeks, I am going to see if they will take a late entry… I scratched because $750 dollars is a lot of money to lose in case the show has to cancel. I feel really bad about this, but the safety of my horses are paramount.
If we get the go ahead, we are going to be driving straight through, no lay-overs. (which is going to suck…16 hr drive…poor ponies)[/QUOTE]

I did the same. There will be other shows. Though I’m only about a 10 minute drive

Do you think commercial haulers will take any precautions to prevent this from spreading, even more?

To prevent unneccessary lawsuits, officials and vets are not releasing information about cases or where they were found to the public. How would you like to get 10 lawsuits just because your horse was exposed to the virus and then someone else who was boarded next to you got it?

I’ve seen a list, provided by a vet who got it from the show itself, of the Washington-based horses who attended the Odgen show. There were about 50 horses on it, from both sides of the state.

Still just 2 cases in WA, and 1 in OR (reported).

Spoke with 2 vets yesterday, locally, and both feel caution of movement is wise, and to use good hygiene practices. Neither classified this as an “outbreak”.

My farrier washed hands and changed his shirt before working on my horse last night. I was careful to keep horse from touching him with his nose.

Many area barns are taking the “no travel” path for the next two weeks.

I have a call in to the very small show I planned on attending this weekend (one day) to see if they would transfer entries to a later show or refund…I’ll eat the cost if I have to. I’m going to make my decision by Friday AM.

The Ogden show ended on May 8 right? Horses came home and showed symptoms?? What was the timeline? If a horse returns from the show, and is showing no symptoms by May 23, is it considered safe and unexposed to the original Typhoid Mary (or EVH Eve?) (sorry—I am joking here…)

I have been informed that if the dressage show I am entered in is canceled, refunds will be issued.

If a horse trial is canceled, why would they not refund your entry fees?

ETA: Just received word the show is canceled. Class fees refundable, office fees not refundable.

Based on the Denver Post which is usually pretty good on facts one of the Colorado cases did not attend the cutting show and was a contact of the horse that did.

http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_18091990

ETA the article was linked from the CSU web page and I would think they would confirm accuracy before linking to it under press releases.

Technically, because the omnibus listing says something like “no refunds in case of cancellation” (though you can always get back both your USEF and USEA starter fees if you ask).

But realistically, because a large part of the cost of the event has usually been spent before the horse trial starts- the cost of building new cross country jumps and painting and moving old ones - or are non-refundable fees - facility fee, potatpotty fees, show jumping jump rental fees, officials fees (in reality , these are all sometimes refundable and sometimes not, it depends on the specific contracts).

Most horse trials will try to give a partial refund, or a credit to a future entry. but won’t commit to it ahead of time, as it depends on how much, if any, money is left.

Some commercial haulers don’t know what’s going on either. On phone With one yesterday trying to coordinate for a mare For an east coast buyer. He asked ME what I could tell him about the outbreak. Seems he didn’t know much. Was so worried about carrying contageous horses letting them on or off rig if sick. Said some states not letting horses in. Not Sure Which state. My mare will stay put until this clears.

Like our equine economy and economy in general needed another challenge! :frowning: Lots of business coming to a grinding haul. Safety before business.

My mare had this in Tx 3 months ago, she probably picked it up in the swimming pool we have. Anyhow she was treated with Steroids banamine and vitamin E. I left her at the vet hospital for 5 nights then brought her home to continue treatment. She never went down, and didn’t fall in the trailer on the way to the vet. She started back to work 5 weeks after being admitted. It did take a lot out of her Muscularly but she is slowly building back. Just keep and eye on your horse, if its acting funny take its temp, then go from there. This doesn’t have to be deadly especially if it is caught early and treated immediately.

Good Luck!

I didn’t read through all 9 pages so far, but has anyone heard of any horses in the midwest that have been tested positive for EHV? I was talking to my trainer last night and I guess there was a barn not too far from us (we live in central MN, so somewhere around there - so that could be really anywhere in MN for that matter) that may have been potentially at this show.

So far, nothing big is going on lately, though our local horse group (TCCTList on Yahoo) has been a buzz with information.

I’m worried but not overly concerned as horses aren’t coming or going from either barn where I’ve got my boys at. But we do have a show coming up the first weekend in June that always attracts a lot of haul-ins and a few over-nighters. What is the incubation period for EHV? or was that already posted? [off to start reading this thread from the beginning]

You may have this already, it was posted to the TCCT.

ETA-
I’m not sure if that link will work to non TCCT members;

Equine Herpesvirus in U.S. Horses
Positive animals linked to Utah event
An outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) has been traced to horses that attended the National Cutting Horse
Association’s Western National Championship in Ogden, Utah from April 30 - May 8, 2011. Horses from
29 states, including Minnesota, attended the show. Animal health officials are working with horse owners to
determine the extent of the outbreak.
Equine Herpesvirus causes a disease of horses called equine rhinopneumonitis. It is found in horses worldwide
but does not affect humans. EHV-1 usually causes respiratory symptoms with fever, but can also cause abortion,
nervous system disease, or death. Some horses began showing neurological symptoms after returning from
the cutting event in Utah. Since then, confirmed positive cases of EHV-1 have been reported in several states.
Horses in other states that may have been exposed to the virus have been quarantined for observation.
The Minnesota Board of Animal Health is working to quarantine 13 potentially exposed horses in Minnesota.
Horse owners are being advised to isolate and observe the animals for 21 days, and to notify their veterinarian if
neurological symptoms or fever are present.
