People have zero idea about pedigree dogs and why they exist. Rescues and mixes have become a huge business plus people get to feel superior to others for not having a purebred from a breeder. It boggles the mind.
I don’t have a problem with new mixes to suit the wants and needs of dog owners. We’ve been doing that since forever.
But the designer dog trend is out of control with trying to make a cute, fluffy, or mini variation of absolutely everything. We especially don’t need these crosses where it’s challenging but fluffy breed + challenging but fluffy breed, like the chowdoodles above. There’s a reason that “breeder” (and I use that term loosely) is the first and only chowdoodle breeder in the country. There’s no benefit (IMO) to that cross.
Saw a mini bernerdoodle the other day. It was still a puppy …maybe 4-5 months…but about 15lbs. So bizarre.
The doodles bother me so badly because not only would a Poodle be better in almost every scenario, but the people getting them don’t want to groom them or have them groomed on schedule. And they’re not hypo-allergenic. They’re not even mentally stable half the time. But somehow spending $5,000+ on a doodle became the norm for a family pet. For people with kids that don’t have time to brush the dog every day. And could be done with a real Poodle since the only difference is the haircut. It just boggles the mind.
I’ve seen some doodles that were bred with consideration for temperament and make excellent family pets.
Then there are people like my friend who bought an aussiedoodle puppy from a BYB because she was SO cute… and now is the proud owner of a neurotic, hyperactive mess.
My dog is half doodle. She sheds like a mofo and is dumb as a box of rocks.
@Heinz57 Did you get the results yet? Was thinking about this thread this morning!
As usual, I got bogged down with other stuff haven’t even sent it in yet.
Pic for tax. His ears go from prick to airplane every time he hits a growth spurt.
So cute!! ^^
Also, I don’t know why it bugs me, but they are not all 'doodles. If anything, they are 'oodles. Poor lab being taken advantage like that. ()
It’s a good thing he’s cute because he has entered the “I don’t have to listen to anything you say” defiant little tweenager phase.
If he’s part catahoula then that attitude may be a feature.
Mine tries to pretend she doesn’t know the rules all the time.
