Empathy please, or I hate the flu!

The party was Saturday night, we all came down with the flu Monday evening. No, I dont know who started it or how some people were spared. We had the food upstairs and the drinks downstairs, it seems like people who were downstairs the most were the ones who got it but not everyone who was downstairs. Luckily it was a great party so was worth it!

I had my pre-op exam already and they passed me assuming I was over the flu symptoms by then which should be no problem but it is a slow go.

Both my daughter and I did get the flu shot in the fall. It probably lessened the severity of the flu. But I am quite certain I have over done it this week, as I still have a little nagging cough and absolutely hit the wall yesterday. I decided not to ride today and just tacked up one horse and watched my trainer ride her.

@Puddin Pie , wise decision, IMO. Take it slowly. I feel so badly for those who are sick.

Was just diagnosed with the flu yesterday and these responses are not encouraging :frowning: Currently awake as the fever is making it impossible to sleep. I’ve only had the flu once before, so not much to compare to this, but this is really rough. Puddin pie, sorry you weren’t able to ride, but probably a wise decision. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Your flu may not follow the same symptoms or as long as some have, it depends how quickly your immune system will wake up and get to working on it.

Do take good care, go easy on yourself, give this time and if you feel worse, do get help right away, don’t wait it out, that is how people get in trouble with this flu.

Gatorade helps when you can’t keep much down and helps you stay hydrated, a few sips at the time.

Please listen to Bluey. I too experienced similar symptoms. NY eve, began feeling chilly and generally uncomfortable. By the next day had a fever, headache, cough etc. Took a full two weeks to begin to feel better. Three weeks until I really felt ok. This flu hits hard, and fast. You do not bounce back. Please seek medical assistance if you are deteriorating. If you have a secondary illness, consider the use of an antiviral. My doctor had, in advance, provided me with a prescription for Tamiflu, but I was too sick to get my thoughts together to start taking it.

@Painted Pony , great post. I am so sorry that many here are or were not just sick, but SO sick. Jingles for health and recovery!

Thanks for the advice, Bluey. I am in the horse industry and never take ā€œdays offā€'per se but have taken a couple of days to try to limit contagion and kick this! I’m generally have a pretty good immune system and rarely get sick so fingers crossed that this passes quickly. I was given Tamiflu yesterday which seems to make me feel worse when I take it, but hopefully it’s doing it’s job anyway. I really feel for everyone who has gone through this, I can’t remember ever feeling this run down- basically crawled to the door to let the dog out today, poor thing is used to a lot of exercise and can’t figure out what is going on :frowning:

Tamiflu knocks you worse than the flu from about one hour after you take it for the next three hours.
You are sicker from it, but the Dr said if I could stand it, it would help, so I stuck with it.
I know of others that just could not and quit after a couple of pills.
They also put me on a go-round of prednisone for my breathing, that always helps you feel better.

I had the flu once about 50 years ago, as a working student.
I fed horses that morning, cleaned stalls, groomed horses, saddled my first horse and walked to the indoor and then could not get on my horse, I was so out of it.
The instructor came in, told another rider to take my horse and I back to the house and put the horse up and me to bed.
I was so very sick in bed, the whole room looked orangey and I was floating and could not find my way up or down to stand up.

I hope never to be that sick again.
That time I was back getting around after two days.
Don’t remember it lasting as long as this time to get over it.

I caught this last Monday and I’m still feeling awful. Last week, I spent most of my time in bed, some days I slept 20hours! On days I felt like i’m feeling better, I would go out and about and feeling very light headed and dizzy, just overall very weak in general. This flu is hitting me so hard. Not have appetite at all, i haven’t eaten a full meal in this whole week.

Empathy and sympathy for all…despite the shots got the flu flying back from the UK a month ago…started to feel better, then ended up in ER with breathing issues…got all enthusiastic today outside in the cold, and now am wheezing and taking inhalators again.

Jingles for an uneventful recovery!

You have my empathy/sympathy. DS has had it since Friday and is still pretty down and out and he’s a strapping 16 yo. It came on fast and was relentless and I knew what it was hours after it hit. He holed up in his room after school and tried to go to swim practice. I drove him there and didn’t let him out of the car and promptly drove him home. I’m working really hard to keep it away from DH and myself. We will see.

Wishing you well, take care of yourself!! It really sucks.

And…the ear continues to hurt, so I went back to the doctor, this time to my regular doctor, not the minute clinic on a Sunday morning. Doctor today says ears are clear and he feels it is a sinus infection that did not clear up with the first antibiotic. So back on antibiotics and got a steroid shot. No wonder I have continued to feel run down.

Oh Jeez @Puddin Pie plenty of liquids, rest, get better.

I managed to ride today, but just can’t do much before I need to rest and cough.

Have hope, there is light at the end of that miserable flu tunnel.

I am finally into the six week feeling ok, thankfully.

I’d be curious if, once an antibody test is available, anyone who was very sick in January actually may have had COVID19. A friend of mine was very sick in January, tested negative for flu but was hospitalized and administer oxygen for several days before fighting it off.

Interesting. My daughter was deathly sick in November with what she thought was the flu which lasted for two weeks. She said she crashed on the second week, and thought she was going to die and could barely breathe. She’s 38, and pretty healthy. She said she coughed so hard, she damaged her vocal cords, and still has a hoarse voice to this day. She bought an expectorant/mucus over the counter thing, and dosed herself with two hot toddies (whisky, honey, lemon and hot tea) every 6 hours and came out on the other side alive. That’s how she describes it. We both think she might have had the Covid 19 back then. Some sources are saying its been around since then? Dunno.
