This thread is making me miss my old man today :’) He wasn’t a super-vocal horse, but he would get excited for treats or a snack. He had a low nicker that almost had a throaty clucking aspect to it, and would escalate to an excited squeal if I was too slow bringing him his treat.
He also had a tendency to let loose a high-pitched whinny if he got a wild hair and decided to run around his pasture. Even into his 20s, he’d just up and decide to run around, whether his pasture buddies joined him or not. The whinny would kind of pulse in time with his gallop, head up and tail flagged. When he finished, he’d usually let out a big blowing snort or two, and settle right back to grazing. He just had to get the wahoos out.
Otherwise, he was very quiet. If a pasture buddy called for him if he was in the barn, he never replied. He was quite content in himself, and with my company. I know this was a total hijack of the topic, but it was nice to reminisce a little bit about him
