Encouraging a potty trained dog to go potty?

Yay!!! Don’t worry about the poop. I think not peeing is a way bigger deal. If you get really worried about the pooping you can always try an infant suppository. Dexter is the king of “no thanks, I’d rather hold it for the entire weekend” when we travel so he’s gotten a few over the past year. I put one in, let him hang out for a few minutes, and then briskly walk on his preferred surface. I have a 100% success rate but I only use that method if I am really desperate.

Finally some poo! And of all places while on a walk and in a random neighbor’s yard (I picked it up, don’t worry). He also peed again in the same spot he did before. I’m satisfied now. Perhaps he just doesn’t poop as often as most dogs I’ve known do.

My 3 yr old will only poop once a day and will only pee about 3 times, 4 if its hot out.

Glad to hear things came out OK:winkgrin:

My silly dog, at 9 years old, is notorious for holding it. On my days off just getting her out of the house is nearly impossible (she goes to work with me). She will and has held it all day, it seems. Yesterday I decided she does it in protest, since I was running errands and she wasn’t invited! She’s yet to suffer from her stubbornness, so I wouldn’t worry.

My labrador ‘farm girl’ was so distracted by everything when she went to the city the first time when I was visiting my parents, that she made it about 36 hours without any poo, and over 24 hours without peeing. I tried her off leash, too but she was so concerned with staying near me that she didn’t take use of the opportunity for privacy
Good news is every trip since then shes been better!
Glad to hear things come out fine, too!

refusing to potty when away from home is a fairly common problem. Common enough that at some rally trials I’ve gone to they have had a “poop raffle” where anyone whose dog will poop away from home at the trial gets to put a ticket in for a drawing for a prize.
Many people are also afflicted with this problem.
