Engagement/wedding rings & riding?

I pretty well never wear my rings (diamond stands 1/4" up off my finger…) because I catch them on my pockets, or scratch myself with them haha. We also run a cattle ranch and have 7 horses… its not safe for me to wear fancy things outside.

I wear them to shows under my gloves that I had to try on specially to fit the rings :stuck_out_tongue: because I like to “take my husband with me”

I have been considering a plain cheap band for so long so I could wear it all the time… but the post about the ring tattoo is very high on my list now! A permanent ring that won’t catch on things

ETA: around here its very common to not ‘know’ who is married or not because hardly ANYONE wears their ring haha… farm/ranch area in Nebraska. My husband never wears his except nice outtings… and even then, I have to remind him. We can joke that he’s my boyfriend sometimes

A friend of mine just last week broke her finger by falling off a spook and getting her ring caught through her glove on something. Doctor said she was lucky not to lose her finger and he had seen it happen before.
No more rings at the barn for her.
Doc is right. A friend of mine’s uncle caught his ring while climbing down a ladder, and it took his finger neatly off. He said he was missing the finger almost before he felt the snag. Very quick. He’s since had the finger reattached. My great-grandmother lost her ring finger when she got her hand caught in the washboard/squeezer thingie doing laundry (back in the day before machines). Her small, plain gold band was to blame for it. It really doesn’t take much to amputate a digit…

I started taking both mine off after a couple things. .

 1. Lost a diamond. that stunk and I think it was because of putting the gloves on and off

 2. Use to show in just my wedding band, but I’m a bit nervous and must have been gripping hard in ring, pinched my skin and bruised my finger . .just not worth it.

I’m also in the “I want a pony not a ring” club. . didn’t get my engagement ring until my 1 year anniversary . … Thundy came 6months before we got hitched!

I never take my rings off for anything. I ride horses, keep them in my backyard and do all the farm chores, groom dogs for a living, etc.

I have a princess cut center stone that’s about a carat and then channel set diamonds half way around both bands. I deliberately picked a low, secure setting because I am HARD on jewelery. The warranty on both rings says as long as I take them in every 6mo for a checkup (free), they will replace (for free) any of the stones, including the center stone or fix anything else for as long as I have the rings. I haven’t had a problem with either ring. I’ve had the engagement ring for three years now and the wedding band for two.

I haven’t read the whole 5 pg’s of what people have said. That being said, hopefully I am not repeating anything anyone else has said.

 • my very first riding instructor told my mom (I was 10 at the time) to take jewlery with stones off when around the barn because if you get horse hair under the stone between the setting, it could make the stone come out…I did not (and still dont) have any rings with gems/stones. I saw though that someone was a dog groomer and they keep their ring on so please correct me if I am wrong!

 • I don’t know how/if this would work, but in highschool when we played sports but did not want to take off rings we would just put tape around your finger right over the ring. just like masking tape i think…I don’t know how that would work if you have a stone sticking up. we did it with our class rings (flat oval face with engraving)

and CONGRATS

Wow, you got alot of responses !!

I never take mine off. He gets mad ( when he remembers to get mad). ehhh whatever.

We have insurance and if I lose it im upgrading!!

OK all this talk of losing fingers is really grossing me out, and is duly noted for future reference… heh.

Also glad to hear about saddles/horses instead of rings! MUCH more practical! hah!

I got a pony AND a diamond ring at the same time, so there! :stuck_out_tongue:

In any case, I don’t wear my engagement ring to the barn, and don’t plan on wearing my wedding band either. It gets locked in the glove box of my car, and then the car gets locked. It’s a safety hazard, as many others have noted, and riding with it on HURTS! Somehow it always spins around and the diamonds stab me. Plus I don’t want to take the risk of losing a diamond or ruining my ring. I do wear stud earrings to the barn, mostly because my earholes are very sensitive/prone to infection and I like to keep something in them to avoid particles of barn dirt getting in the holes. I’ll occasionally wear a small necklace with a snap-able chain if I happened to have worn one to work that day before the barn, but no other jewelery.

Aku![](al987…I would think taping a ring would help at least with things like taking gloves on and off, etc. Covers the edges so nothing catches.

Not sure if tape would be enough to stop a ring from getting caught on something serious, like machinery, etc.

I see a person in this thread has a tension setting…I’ve heard those hold up very well to abuse and I love the looks, but those still worry me about losing a stone. I know the tension is a lot stronger than prong settings, maybe it’s just the look of having open edges of a diamond visible that makes me nervous.

My sister was thinking of having a tension set ring made for herself to replace her wedding band. This is the style she likes:

Very cool, but that open setting look…yikes, worries me. But then she has a desk job. I wouldn’t even go with a semi-bezel setting when I had my wedding band/engagement ring combined 3 years ago. Our jeweler said probably best we go with the full bezel since the wedding band I was trading in was platinum and I had worn that out, LOL! We considered stainless steel, but ended up going with white gold and I’ll just trade the band in for gold value and replace in a few years. I’m beyond brutal on jewelry that I wear daily. Had to spend a fortune on a watch that could hold up. It’s sad in a way because I adore jewelry. (my one nod to bein a girl, LOL)

Lost My Diamond Too!
what a timely thread…

yesterday, I lost the diamond out of my wedding ring…

we’ve been married 11 years…it broke my heart and I kick myself for wearing the ring out when doing stuff with my animals…I imagine it contributed to the loosening of the stone.
I am sure my diamond was loosened from wearing it around the barn. I was going through a drive through to get a Diet Coke and looked at my hand and my diamond was gone. Looked everywhere but could not find it. I had started using our 2nd BR to shower in since the girls have grown up and turned the shower on. Noticed something on the floor of the tub and low and behold, there was my diamond! I can’t believe it didn’t go down the drain! Anyway, no more wedding rings at the barn, I don’t even wear a band.

If I remember, I take off my “bling” ring/wedding band. I have a simple small white gold band that I have to wear for the barn or work (vet tech). Again if I remember to trade them out lol. My wedding ring is a jacket style that my engagement ring fits into so it’s fairly flat on top and never had any issues with the spinning or pinching.

Hi all, I have the same question - is it ok to have another couple of engagement rings to work with horses? If so, which should I choose?

Sure, why not!? Because it’s better to lose something not that expensive and important for your heart. You can check even non-golden ones, like here: https://lalaserengraving.com/cobalt-rings/ . The price is lower and the ring will be not that bad. But don’t forget to change back it after comming home
