Engineered hardwood floor and big dogs...

Home Depot has a Pergo type (called outlast?) that supposedly is water resistant for 24 hours.

A friend put solid Walnut in her house, and even with runners and rugs everywhere, her daughter’s dog clawed it terribly. Plus, the floor not covered by rugs faded very quickly, so it needs refinishing, but nothing can be done about the fading. The dog is about 50 pounds, with shorter claws, and he has ruined the floor in about six months.

They do make very realistic looking, laminate, so in my final house I’ll probably do that, and the wood look tile in the wet areas.

I put the click together luxury vinyl plank down this past December. Three dogs at the time, 50+ pounds. Nary a scratch.

It’s a little slick for them, but they’ve learned to run like a banshee down the runner, hit the brakes, tippy toe, tippy toe to the next rug, run for three strides, tippy toe and throw your head to the outside to counterbalance on the turn, run like a banshee, etc.

It wasn’t cheap, but I absolutely love it. We went with one with a cork backing. It is installed on a concrete slab that was extremely unlevel. We have a couple of bouncy spots (that should’ve been leveled prior to installation), but they’re in more peripheral spots that don’t get traffic.
