Equine companions - mini horse, donkey, mini donkey

I agree that donkeys ideally should be placed with other donkeys… but… mine also seems just fine with horse buddies only. Believe me, she gets PLENTY of social interaction. She’s even higher in the pecking order than my TB mare!

I’ve observed that when you have two or more donkeys turned out with horses, they donkeys tend to pair off and keep to themselves. Then you risk sometimes losing the benefit of companionship for a lone horse.

I once boarded at a place where my WB mare lived out in a ~10 acre pasture with a herd of about 4 horses and 3 donkeys. The horses and donkeys NEVER interacted with each other. After months of living in that pasture, my mare would still spook and freak out when the donkeys came too close! Being left alone with them was like being left alone with horse-eating monsters for her. Yet she’s fine with my donkey, even when I take my other horse away.

Have two min-mules. One is appaloosa and one is pinto. Very cute! They are about 10 hands. Great companions for the horse. They do get fat easily so I have to pen them up off the grass half the time. Horses are not usually afraid of them so they work well here.

We inherited two semi-feral standard donkeys who are now tame and a hoot. They mostly hang together, very much bonded to each other. In general, I think the horses prefer horses as companions and the donkeys prefer donkeys, but one donkey will goof with the gelding and last night the yearling filly was purposefully chasing the donkeys in good fun after a rain.

Standard donkeys will also protect themselves. We have free ranging chickens and we’ve lost very few to varmints and none to loose dogs, I think because we’ve got donkeys. The donks will not tolerate a strange dog…and our resident dogs give them respect and wide berth.

They are faster than you might expect and feeding them is cheap, compared to a horse. Donkeys are great thinkers and they genuinely appear to have a sense of humor. Ours are not optimists at heart, which is endearing.

Plus, donkeys seem to find themselves in sad situations. It doesn’t take great effort to find one that needs an upgrade. They will be with you a long time, but ours have been very hardy. We’ve dealt with foot problems, bad scrapes, colic and ulcers with the horses. The donkeys? Nothing, nada.

My little mule (who I got from a COTHer) is a geat companion. She has her own paddock and stall but does go out on pasture with my QH gelding. They get along well and she is very good at defending her space and moving quickly when needed.

She’s not no maintenance as she needs a muzzle to go out and needs her weight managed pretty closely. Not to mention that we just last night finished 11 days of abscess soaking and poulticing. :frowning: but she’s far less cost and effort than a pony or another horse and cute as all heck.

And no doubt why Eyeore of Winnie The Pooh was presented his rather dour self. However as youngsters they definitely seem to be more light hearted. There is a video on my farm FB page of Thistle, our 3 month old jenny, running laps around the landscaping in our front yard. And then I have photos of a prior little jenny, Vidalia, who was the companion of my big leopard Appaloosa gelding, who would go trail riding with us at liberty. So there we would be, three horses, three or four dogs and one minature donkey. It was priceless!

If anyone in the GA area is looking for a mini mule/donk companion, just seen over on ATL CL: https://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/grd/5091959466.html

Free to good home. Won’t last long.

That is a seriously cute mule. If I was in GA I’d be super tempted.

UrbanHennery, your mule is adorable!!!

I have a standard and a mini donkey, and they are the funniest critters ever! Everyone needs donkeys.

They do pair off together but they also interact with the horses quite a bit. The standard is my yearling’s BFF. They roughhouse and play a ton. When my yearling was a baby, the donkeys would take turns guarding him while he napped, giving his momma a break from foal-watching. No fear of coyotes or any strange dogs around, either.

Get donkeys - they’re awesome!

UrbanHennery your mule is so pretty!!!

I’m not sure how anyone can view these pictures and remain donkey/mule-less! They’re the best!

Mini donk on a tear.

I have an older (supposedly 16, vet says that teeth say ~25) 12.2hh pony mule I got as a companion for my horse remaining at home when I moved and took one w/ me. Bonus is that she can be ridden, though she’s not the best in the ring she’s great on trails w/ another horse. She’s a very easy keeper, 2 flakes of hay twice a day is all she needs(we don’t have much grass, I’m sure if we did she wouldn’t need that), though we do give her a teeny handful of grain as well just to give her something to munch on so she doesn’t feel left out. She is a MAJOR escape artist, we have had to make our fencing more secure in several spaces, but we have now figured out how to contain her successfully; good thing too as when she escaped she was not at all easy to catch.

Well, I’ve had the Evil Burrito (Odie) for about three years now. Other than being evil, he’s been a gem. The only time he wasn’t a gem was when he was evil and kicked out during a squabble over food and stuck his foot neatly into a gap in the fence and broke his leg.

Otherwise, super low maintenance . Teeth done once a year, shots and sheath at the same time, then I keep an eye on his feet and they only need professional attention about twice a year. He’s awesome, I love him. I agree with the poster who said you will probably have to clip in the summer though. I clip Odie about three times a year because of how much he runs around and grows funny hair. Maybe from mini breeding? Regardless, he never sheds and when it grows in, it grows in in weird patches. When I lived in Alabama, we had standard donkeys and I clipped them as well…

FatCatFarm: Love it! We call those “donkey zoomies.”

SupaFlySkye: What an adorable mule!!!
