So what does this hold - looks like two small squares? I would love to design something but I want it to be reasonably easy to move too. I have such heavy clay that my horses would be knee deep in mud if I fed them in the same place every day this time of year. It’s one of the main reasons I haven’t considered a feeder before.
Check out this site, lots of ideas for DIY small feeders and you can order kits if you prefer. The owner posts here too.
I’ve got clay too, and one of these days will make a heavy use feeding pad area with geotextile and aggregate for my hay feeder. For now I use rubber stall mats around it, which isn’t ideal but keeps it from being knee deep mud.
I think so, and we are on the same page with the mud. It’s sturdy enough that it won’t tip over, but we can pick it up and move it. It’s more like a trough than anything. We put some U-nails in it so we can snap the hay net to it.
I am a small, older woman, although relatively strong, and I can move the Tarter hay basket by myself. If not moving it far, I simply shove it over the paddock gravel.
If I need to move it a greater distance (yards instead of feet), I lift out the plastic liner, tilt the metal basket frame over on its side, and roll the frame to the new location, then drop it back into position and drop in the liner. Similar to rolling a round bale feeder, but much easier, IMO.
