Equine Themed Book Suggestions!?!?

Hello - just looking for some good book suggestions as I seam to be in a slump with my choices. I love a good equine themed book, but haven’t found antyhign new lately to sink my teeth into, any suggestions?

I’ve loved anything that Jody Jaffe has written, also have read all of the A Circuit series - even though i’m to old for them I still enjoy the story line. And i’ve done most of Tami Hoag’s that have an equine twist.

Anyone else have some good ones to suggest? Thanks in advance!

Show gypsies, Riders and Polo by Jilly Cooper, The Monday horses, Last Junior Year.

I don’t know about the “good” epithet, but it was entertaining

  • listened to the audiobook (on loan from library - of course library does not
    have part 2)

I enjoy Rita Mae Brown’s ‘Sister’ series and Georgina Blooomberg’s, Jody Jaffe’s, Kit Ehrman’s.

The book about Harry De Leyer’s Snowman is a fantastic read.

I read all of Barbara Morgenroth’s Bittersweet farm books over christmas and really enjoyed them. No painful “that doesn’t really happen”, even the riding lessons were actually good lessons.

Felt less “name droppy” than the Bloomberg books. And yes, I’m too old for all of these as well

The Blaze of Glory books are good. The author even posts here sometimes.

Thanks Stellablue!

The Dressage Chronicles (there are two) are great! Almost made me want to do Dressage, lol!
Check the free kindle book thread on Off Course, there are some good suggestions there even if they are no longer free. Oh I also like the Born that Way series, unusual but a good read.

Murder She Rode, by Holly Menino, is holding my interest.

Where do you look for equine themed novels? Just in case I write a few I wondered where you’d look to find them. Kindle? ITunes?

My ponydom site is on hiatus while I move it to a new server, but I can make many suggestions still:

  • The Lady, by Anne McCaffrey
  • Last Junior Year, by Barbara Morgenroth
  • Trophies, by Ainslie Sheridan
  • Fly By Night, The Team, The Right Hand Man, by KM Peyton (much of hers are horsey and most are excellent)
  • Sky Rocket, by Margaret Cabell Self
  • The Monday Horses, The Crumb, by Jean Slaughter Doty
  • Everyday Friends, by Lucy Diggs
  • Vicki and the Black Horse, Vicki and the Brown Mare, by Sam Savitt
  • Dark Horse, Chance Meeting, by Laura Moore
  • The Fields of Praise, by Patricia Leitch
  • The Perfect Distance, by Kim Ablon Whitney
  • The Gift, by Kirk Douglas
  • My Horses, My Teachers, by Alois Podhajsky (not fiction but narrative)
  • Moon in the Water, by Lucy Diggs
  • Horseplay, by Judy Reene Singer
  • Catch Rides, by Sara McAulay

An excellent fantasy novel I read recently is Pegasus, by Robin McKinley. She has written others with strong horses also, The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Sword.

If you haven’t found Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar series, that also has lots of fantasy horses.

Laura Crum writes horse mysteries with a veterinarian hero.

I have lots more …

How about “50 Shades of Hay”?
oh wait. That’s what my horse reads.

Oh, I loved the Dressage Chronicles too! Riding Lessons also good! I discovered most of them through Amazon’s “recommended for you” after I read A Circuit (also fun).

Hunt Country Suspense Novels by Jan Neuharth (3 in the series) is a great read.
The Hunt is the first book, followed by The Kill and then The Chase.

Bluegrass State of Mind by Kathleen Brooks (FREE on Kindle) takes place outside of Lexington, KY and features the Keeneland Races as well as the the Derby. It is the first in a long series. This is the only one where horses play as large a role but the entire series is beyond addicting!

Yonahalassee Riding Camp for Girls by Antonia Disclafani

Accidental Cowgirl by Maggie McGinnis- completely cheesy but a great guilty pleasure you don’t want to admit to reading!

Every one of these books is available on Kindle

I’ve read all her books. Good easy reads.

I love these and am hoping a 4th is in the works. I also enjoyed Rita Mae Brown’s Sister Jane series and especially her Riding Shotgun. Out of print but easy to find is A Portion for Foxes by Jane McIlvaine McClary.

Renegade Champion: The Unlikely Rise of Fitzrada - SUPERB!!!

ammoro - agree completely about the K Brooks’ Bluegrass series. Will have to check the Jan Neuharth ones.
