I’ve switched over to the generic also. I don’t see any difference in the effects
I’ve used both and found no difference between the Nexium and Costco or CVS generic.
Thanks for the reports on the generic! What good feedback
I too have started using a generic as I am tapering (from Rite-aid) and have also not noticed any difference.
I’ve been using the generic from Walmart with my mare for about two weeks now. She is ulcer prone and I wanted to try this before going to UlcerGard. Her attitude has improved significantly and she’s eating much better! I’ve been thrilled with how she’s done on the pills! She’s getting 60mg a day so that’s three 20mg capsules. Another plus is that it’s not paste (nor liquid gold) so no fighting to medicated and no worrying about her spitting it out!
Any Canadians out there using the generic form? Nexium seems pretty pricey here in Canada ($14 plus tax for 14 pills)!
I am. Order via Amazon.com, not Amazon.ca. You can get the generic(Kirkland) pack 3x14pills for $20 CDN and free shipping.
Interesting, thank you for the link!
I screwed up and bought 2 boxes of TABLETS not the mini-capsules. Will they still work?
Just looking quickly at the package insert I was able to find online–the tablets are coated instead of buffered. As long as they go down intact, they’ll work. If the horse crunches them, they’re toast. Confirm with the package insert for what you bought–if it says “do not crush or chew” in the “administration” section, they’re coated.
Do what you can to preserve the coating and you should be fine If you’re really worried, return for the capsules.
Huh. Interesting. I never noticed before that Nexium bills itself as “delayed release.” I wonder if that’s one reason a smaller dose (vs omeprazole) is effective.
Thanks Simkie I knew you would come through! I don’t want to try to return. I’ll just “eat it” (the cost) and get the right stuff.
I have only used the tablets and they seem to work fine.
Very interesting post! I recently actually asked my (human) pharmacist about Nexium alternatives for myself (health insurance is annoying!!!)…I currently take 40mg of an extended release, prescription dose. From what he said - at least for humans - it sounds like if you get extended release capsules, it is important to split up the dosage if you are taking more than the regular 20mg cap. That way you get “covered” for a full 24hrs.
The other thing he said was that Nexium (generic Esomeprazole), and Prilosec OCT (generic Omeprazole) actually work differently. Nexium is a proton inhibitor, and Prilosec is an acid reducer – I think. The Nexium is a stronger, more effective medicine, but the Prilosec is like the second best from what I he told me.
Also, good to know I take the same dose as a horse
He’s wrong. They’re both PPIs. They’re actually the SAME MOLECULE. Nexium is just the s-enantiomer of Omeprazole. Here’s an article about it:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enantiomer
IOW, Omeprazole is a pile of identical gloves. Both right and left handed gloves are included in that pile. Nexium is that SAME PILE, but with only the right handed gloves.
This is pretty basic chemistry stuff, and if your pharmacist is claiming they’re in a different class, I’d be hesitant to believe anything he says.
Aren’t all of the drugs technically acid reducers? It’s just whether they are PPIs (the 'prazole drugs) or H2 blockers (the 'dine drugs) that dictates the mechanism by which acid is reduced?
I’m sorry you feel that my healthcare provider is not genuine, but I was just trying to share the information that I was provided with.
This information is available everywhere. Do your own research. The information you were provided with is WRONG. Pharmacists, like other professionals, can be wrong.
Here’s an update.
Mare was having mild colic episodes about once per month, usually after beginning to eat her dinner. She would roll a few times, stop eating and then appear to be ok. It never required banamine and lasted 20 minutes max. She was also slow to finish her grain.
I started the three tabs (generic) per day a couple of months ago. After a month, I went down to two capsules for a few weeks, and now I’m done to one capsule. I also added smartpak smart digest ultra and their new leg up stomach pellets (antacid).
Since starting the treatment there has only been one small episode after she was vaccinated which may not have been related (she has vaccine reactions). She is much less cranky for grooming and seems happier and quieter under saddle. She eats her grain quickly and all at once.
Im really pleased with the results and once I’ve weaned her off I will use it as a preventative for travel etc.
I accidentally used the tablets first. I still saw changes in my horse, and he ate them right down. I did get the regular capsules after that, but his ulcers went away right on the schedule. Doesn’t seem to make a huge difference if they are tablets, but maybe I just got lucky.
