That’s why stadium after a Three Day starts in the afternoon!
I grew up doing hunters and equitation (badly), and had half a foot in Saddleseat too.
I’ll go ahead and say that I think eventers are better. Just after moving into a barn where most everybody was into eventing or dressage, I think the level of horsemanship (even for lower level riders) was much higher. Even people going N with no plans to move up seemed to know more about feed, conditioning, lameness, etc. Even the folks at those low levels were much braver than the equivalent levels I was familiar with in H/J land. And there seems to be more openness to taking lessons and training with multiple people. And of course, the willingness to help at competitions, the more friendly vibe, and possibility for a busy adult amateur to find themselves competing against big names is great for upping one’s game
And I know this is a stereotype, but it matches my experience: it seems to me eventers are trained and encouraged to be self-sufficient, while h/j land is more likely to foster a certain dependence on the trainer (heck, I was once yelled at for going into the ring when called, because my trainer was at the other ring. She would have preferred I hold up the whole works waiting for her)
That’s all anecdotal and I shouldn’t fuel the “x is the best! everyone else sucks!” thing, but I’ve come to think eventers are better for a variety of reasons.
